13: A New Musical

The passage from youth into adulthood is a ubiquitous theme embodied by its many awkward, humorous, dramatic, and touching moments. This premise lends itself nicely to the stage in FMCT Children’s Studio Theatre’s upcoming show, 13: A New Musical.

Written by Tony award winner Jason Robert Brown, the show centers on Evan Goldman who is quickly approaching the ominous number 13; the age suddenly denotes the departure from childhood and carries with it overwhelming changes. Goldman moves to a new school just before scheduling the date of his bar mitzvah; as he strives to make friends and succeed in middle school, he learns that age is a source of incessant life changes.

Throughout the show, actors battle with the many difficulties of growing up; from awkward first romances to stark expositions of betrayal and true friendship, the show encompasses both the excitement along with the tribulation of 13 year olds. The show will be directed by Rebecca Meyer-Larson,
“I’m trying out for 13 because the music is awesome and its cool that the cast is only 13 people. The directive team also looks awesome,” said Drew Lausch, a Fargo South sophomore auditioning for the show.

Auditions were held April 26 at 4:00 7:00 and April 27 at 4:00 and 7:00. Show practice dates are scheduled throughout the summer and it will run July 29-31 and August 4-7. “I’m really looking forward to a summer where I could work with kids my and also in a production about kids my age,” said Alex Quam, a freshmen at Fargo South who also auditioned for the production.
