Fargo South students took a break from the books to admire the work of their talented peers during the annual Art Show. The works of students were displayed throughout the building, brightening the halls with their vivid colors and variety of subjects.
Junior Erin Sandsmark, a prize winner, thought the Art Show was very successful this year. “Ms. Odden did a really great job putting it all together, and I know it was a lot of time on her part. The show was great in the commons. My favorite part was the chalk contest. It was really fun being a part of it this year, and I thought everyone did a really great job.”
In addition to the displayed artwork, students could observe the artists at work; outside, students took the childhood pastime of sidewalk chalk to a new level. Artists emerged from the their sidewalk masterpieces splashed in a mix of colored powders reminiscent of the outcome of a child’s playful coloring. But these were no elementary sketches. A student’s replica of the Mona Lisa and a mysterious-looking Salvador Dali adorned the south entry way.
“I chose the Mona Lisa because it speaks of generations of mystery and was crafted by one of history’s arguably best artisits of all time. It was an extremely enjoyable challenge for me to take on and I’m glad I chose it; it was a pleasure,” said junior Jake Posy.
Anyone was able to purchase a sidewalk square and chalk a drawing to be judged for competition. Students were able to get out of classes for the day to create their pieces.
The passion was evident. The students work with a clear and focused passion throughout the year; the Art Show was an opportunity to observe the work of this often-enigmatic group. “What I enjoy about art is sharpening the skills of my mind, hand, and eye and being able to capture real life on a blank canvas,” said Posy.
In a culture which so often revolves around spectator events, the Art Show provides a means by which students are exposed to and hopefully learn to appreciate the quiet inspiration art has to offer. “I have enjoyed art ever since I was little. I have always loved it, but I can’t really place why. Art just makes me feel good, and I am fascinated by it in so many ways. I love to study art and I love to create it,” said Sandsmark.
