Erin Go Bragh: Whiskey and Food on St. Patty’s Day
By Micheal Ramirez

With St. Patty’s Day just passed, the Irish among us prepared a fun-filled day of food, drink and spending time with friends and family. Whether spending the day at home or out and about at the many pubs and bars in town, there was fun to be found. To keep the spirit of St. Paddy’s alive, here are a few food and drink tips. For a great bowl of Irish stew, try O’Learys in either Moorhead or Fargo. While I don’t know of any truly authentic pubs serving Irish dishes, the Three Lions serves up classic English pub favorites such as fish and chips, bangers and mash (sausages served with mashed potatoes with a Guinness-spiked gravy). Usher House in Moorhead also serves up those same dishes with their own unique twists. In the mood to lift a pint or two? Then Duffy’s or Dempsey’s will fill that need. In the mood for corned beef and cabbage? Well nearly all the places I’ve just named will be having said dish, some versions are better than others, but as I’m partial to corned beef, all versions are delicious. The choices on where to enjoy the day are numerous with live bands playing at every large venue in town, next year’s St. Patty’s Day is sure to be anything but boring, so raise a pint of Guinness and toast Erin Go Bragh, but if you have the misfortune to be working that day and don’t have the time (or energy to make corned beef and cabbage or even go out for a few pints) here are a few simple sandwiches that just might bring what your craving for.
Rueben Sandwich
For this classic corned beef sandwich you will need:
Two slices of thick cut marble rye bread
1 tbsp of either Russian or thousand island dressing
4 slices of real Swiss cheese
1/4 cup of sauerkraut
5 thick deli cut slices of corned beef
On a flat surface, place the bread and spread with the dressing. Top with the cheese slices. Now top with the drained sauerkraut and add the corned beef. Bring the sandwich together and butter the top, place in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes or until cheese melts and is bubbly. Slice and serve immediately with a pickle spear and a cold bottle of Guinness. Enjoy.
Reds Deli Sandwich
For this classic sandwich you will need:
1 sub roll
2 -3 slices of corned beef
2-3 slices of roast beef
Sautéed onions and peppers
Swiss cheese
Spicy brown mustard
Butter and brown your sub roll. In a small sauté pan add 1 tbsp of butter, quickly heat through the corned beef and roast beef slices. Add the onion-pepper mixture, stuff all you can onto the sub roll and cover with spicy brown mustard and Swiss cheese. Place in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes or until cheese melts. Serve immediately and enjoy.
