Jazzie Mae’s Place: Fresh Food, Artistic Flair, Organic Ingredients

Vegans in the area have been abuzz with excitement and anticipation, watching as Jazzie Mae’s Place began to take shape. The doors opened on April 26.

It is everything I hoped for and more: a bright sunny eating area adorned with fresh flowers; lively music playing; a refrigerated section of organic fruits, drinks and salads to go; a variety of vegan candy; organic face and body products; homeopathic lozenges; hemp food products; a variety of tie-dyed clothing; Himalayan bath salts and salt lamps, and even vegan dog treats.

The food is fresh and wonderful. It will take many visits to taste my way through their menu. For my first visit I chose a platter of marinated vegetables with tahini magic sauce. Bright colored carrots, broccoli, red and yellow peppers, zucchini, snow peas, celery, onions, and tofu were delicious on their own, but the tahini sauce brought it to another level. I also ordered a fresh mango and strawberry smoothie with rice protein powder and organic apple juice. Two slices of whole grain bread accompanied the veggies, and it was a filling meal. I couldn’t resist purchasing chocolate decadence peanut butter candy as an extra treat.

A quick review of their menu: appetizers include pate du jour with fresh veggies, olives and pickles, with a choice of bread or crackers; edname in sesame oil, tamari and sea salt; and rollies (organic pickles, vegan cream cheese, tofu and carrots in a lettuce leaf). There is soup de jour, potatoes du jour (with steamed vegetables), grain du jour (rice, quinoa or millet with steamed veggies), pizzas, a variety of protein drinks and smoothies, fresh fruit or veggie salads, sandwiches, and organic rainbow popcorn.

And they use biodegradable eco products for their eating utensils and plates. So, not only is Jazzie Mae’s a joy for vegans, it is a joy for environmentalists. Omnivores beware-this kind of food may convince you to eat healthy and go vegan! As I left, I thought of John Mayor’s song “We Keep Waiting on a World to Change” and realized that change is happening here. I couldn’t stop smiling all afternoon.
