Streets Alive offers healthy food choices

There has been a rise in child obesity and the onset of what used to be just adult diseases. It is said that the current generation of children are facing a shorter life span than their parents. This has not happened for over two centuries. Nationwide obesity in children ages 6 to 19 has tripled from 1990 to 2002. The average American child does not eat a diet that meets the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, nor do they get enough daily physical activity.

These alarming facts and more about child obesity were found on a link for Cass County Healthy People Initiative. I know how bad it sounds, but there are some easy alternatives for daily activity and healthy choices for food. The Streets Alive Festival is offering a two-weekend chance to get out and move. Along the route spanning three miles there will be art and music, along with plenty of healthy activities for people of all ages and fitness levels. There will also be food.

On Aug. 28, vendors will be out by the Great Northern Park serving up healthy options to refuel and cool down after enjoying the Streets Alive route and activities. The Great Northern Clock Tower Café will be providing smoothies and other frozen delights. We will also see a return of Pizza Truck from last year’s Streets Alive. Pizza Truck will be providing a number of healthy choices of wood fired pizza. The opportunity to enjoy some fantastic food while taking over the streets of downtown Fargo and Moorhead sounds like a fine way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The second weekend of Streets Alive, Sept.18, the NDSU Team Maker will be providing grilled veggies by the 1st Ave bridge on the Fargo side.

I want everyone to come out and promote healthy living by participating in the Streets Alive. There are no excuses; the event is free and open to many forms of human-powered transportation along the route. Skate, bike, dance, and hula hoop your way around the FM area. Most of all, get the kids away from the TV screen and the whole family out in the sun for a little exercise and healthy snacks.
