The Great American Meatout
On or around March 20, thousands of people around the US (plus dozens of other countries) will be celebrating a day dedicated to kicking the meat habit and enjoying a wholesome diet of vegetables, fruit and whole grains.
It’s a diet that’s non-violent, good for your health and the health of the planet. Kicking the meat habit reduces risk of heart disease and some cancers (colon, breast, prostate) and decreases exposure to infectious pathogens, hormones and antibiotics that are common in factory-farmed animals.
Kicking the meat habit frees up grain that can easily feed the world’s hungry, and it decreases global warming, protects our air and water, and keeps the world’s forests from being clear-cut to feed more animals.
There are so many benefits to eating a plant-based diet, and now it is easier than ever with area grocery and health food stores offering so many products.
To obtain a free vegetarian starter kit, click on www.meatout.org. Consider keeping the spirit alive by developing MeatOut Mondays, one day a week where you pledge to avoid animal product foods (eggs, dairy, meat) for six months. You’ll receive weekly e-mail recipes, advice and encouragement. Everyone benefits. There is no better time to start. You can do it; you can make a difference!
