HPR Songspiel: Misogyny
By James Osborne
Songspiel Producer
This week’s Songspiel reviews songs that “celebrate one of the sad realities of love: misogyny. Love is just sexual desire made needlessly complicated by high expectations and impossible standards imposed on us by family, society, romantic comedies, pop songs. Pop songs are the worst. So much empty sentiment and so many false promises delivered with so much passion and intensity that it’s hard not to assume that the performers meant every word of what they’re saying. Love is the most popular topic in pop music because it’s something everyone experiences. It’s a commonality and it evokes so much emotion in people. But life teaches us that love ends when one or both parties involved get tired of #uc%ing the other one. After that the relationship either dissolves or ends in deceit and animosity; or, settles into boring, co-dependent predictabilty. Sing a song about that, Justin Bieber!
