Minn-kota PAAWS: Animal Welfare Benefit

This Friday, October 16, Gio’s Grill and Bar in Moorhead will be hosting a fundraiser and silent auction to benefit Minn-Kota PAAWS (People Advocating Animal Welfare Services). A six dollar cover charge will get people into the silent auction and a show by Little Donny & the Groove Tones.

Minn-Kota PAAWS is an organization that helps low income families spay or neuter their pets at low costs. Lori Magelky started PAAWS when she found a stray cat that had already given birth to 2 litters of kittens. This started her bringing cats to a doctor who would spay the cat for cheap. From this, the organization grew to advocate animal welfare and help slow the increasing, unwanted animal population.

The group has neutered over 1800 cats in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Gail Ventzke, a volunteer, noted, “We help cats from local pounds, the street, trapped in buildings or even taken from a construction Dumpster.” These cats are the ones that need to be helped the most, and PAAWS’ non-profit approach is the way they help.

The cost of spaying and neutering charged by PAAWS is the exact amount of the procedure, which goes to the veterinarian. The workers are all volunteers, but the medical supplies and building costs still need to be paid. For the organization to continue, it relies on the donations of others.

Gio’s Grill and Bar donated their time and premises to arrange the event and silent auction. The auction includes everything from “pet haircuts, to human haircuts, to diamond necklaces,” said Ventzke. Everything at the auction was donated by local businesses, and all of the profit will go to keep the organization running and raise awareness of Minn-Kota PAAWS.

The event is being held at Gio’s Grill and Bar, located at 123 21st Street South in Moorhead. The silent auction will start at 5 p.m., with Little Donny & the Groove Tones playing at 8. There is a 6 dollar cover charge to get in. Minn-Kota PAAWS relies on the donations and help of others to keep going, and this silent auction will allow the organization to continue doing its work.
