Night of Terror

It all started one night in 1984. My girlfriend at that time, Sara, thought it would be fun to play with a Ouija board. I told her they were a big joke and it would be a waste of time, but she insisted. She told me that her aunt had taught her how to use the board properly and that it would be fun.

I reluctantly agreed. Our friend Dan decided to join in.

Sara and Dan went first. Sara slowly took the board out of the box and told Dan to sit down and cross his legs, so that the edges of the board would sit on the ends of his knees. She then crossed her legs as well and set the Ouija Board down so that all four corners of the board were on their knees. Sara placed the planchette on the center of the board and had Dan put his fingers very lightly on the planchette. She told Dan not to move his fingers and let whoever comes through the board move the planchette. Together they said a prayer to protect them from any evil influences, and then they began.

I watched Sara’s hands. It looked like she was pushing the planchette so I heckled her. She turned to me and said,“If you really think it is all a bunch of B.S., then why don’t you get over here and do it, big shot!” I said, “Fine!” and sat down to prove I was right.

I sat down with Sara, we entered the board reciting a prayer of protection, and then Sara began asking questions. While she was asking questions the planchette was moving in circles. I barely had my fingers on it and was not moving it. I looked at her fingers and thought she was the one moving it. Sara continued, but I was bored and had had enough.

I was ready to quit when Sara asked one more question. She asked whoever came through the board to tell us what his name was. The planchette began to move and spelled out, T-O-M. She then asked why it was there and it spelled out my name.

Sara asked the board who Tom was and what it meant to me and it spelled out S.O.U.L.. That is when I noticed that Sara’s fingers were not on the planchette and I got really freaked out and threw the board off my knees.

The whole time this was happening, I had my eyes on Sara and her eyes were tightly closed. I had also taken my fingers off the planchette and noticed that her fingers weren’t on the planchette either. The planchette had moved all by itself without either of our hands on it!

Sara screamed “No! You need to close the board out!” I was frightened, wasn’t sure what to do. I sat back down and we said a prayer to get out of the board.
Then she threw the planchette at me and said, “You stupid ass, you never listen to me. Everything has to be a game to you, doesn’t it? You have no idea what you just did, you idiot!”

At that very moment while she was yelling at me, my friend Dan yelled, “Lookout man!” He was pointing to the ceiling. I looked up and I was sitting directly under a light fixture that was shaking as if it was trying to fall on top of me. I immediately moved and the light fixture stopped shaking at same time.
The light in the bathroom was turning on and off by itself, followed by running water coming from the same bathroom. The light would turn on, and then the water would turn on. Then the light would turn off, then the water, rapidly.

We thought someone was playing tricks on us so we decided to walk down to the bathroom as a group and catch whoever it was red-handed. I turned to Dan and whispered, “When I count to three, we will both jump out and scare the daylights out of whoever is in there.” I counted with my fingers “1, 2, 3”, and we both jumped around the corner. The lights turned off, the water turned off and there was no one there.

Dan and I realized Sara was not next to us. She was standing in the middle of the hallway, with her arms at her side and her head down as if she were asleep standing up.

“Sara, what are you doing?” I asked. She didn’t respond and didn’t move. I said “Sara, you’re creeping us out, what are you doing?”

Sara lifted her head, looked at us, and with a deep dark voice, “I’m not Sara, Sara is gone!” and then, whatever it was made the creepiest laugh I’ve ever heard. Sara then collapsed to the floor.

Dan and I ran to Sara. She wasn’t responding. “We need to get the hell out of here,” I said. We were trying to get her to her feet when she woke up and asked, “What happened?”

There was a loud bang on the front door. I opened it but no one was there. Another loud bang. I opened the door and we ran as fast as we could out of that house.

We slept in the car that night and moved to another house shortly thereafter.

I was scared for about four years after all this happened and slept with a nightlight until I was about 23 years old. I would hear footsteps behind me wherever I went and whoever was with me could hear them too. The footsteps didn’t go away until I met my new roommates in 1988, who were evangelists, and helped me get rid of whatever had attached itself to me.

I have never and will never again use an Ouija Board.
