Students Take Downtown

For those who are new to the area and for those who have yet to truly explore it, you haven’t really lived Fargo-Moorhead until you’ve experienced its downtown. We have a glorious backyard where one cannot help but revel in the outrageous amount of entertainment that is literally around every corner.

That is why we at the High Plains Reader wanted to roll out the biggest, reddest carpet imaginable for you, as we graciously welcome you to the finest that Fargo-Moorhead has to offer. Prepare for Edu-tainment 101.

This class works on the positive reinforcement system. Come downtown on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m., and simply explore the downtown area. For each numbered downtown business that you visit (as seen on our map) you will receive a ballot that can win you hundreds of dollars in prizes. Each business you visit gets you another ballot, thus increasing your chances at winning. Explore more businesses, win more prizes. Simple.

There’s more to this event than just stuffing the ballot box, however. In addition, there will be all kinds of discounts, goodies, food, music, art, dancing and good old fashioned North Dakota camaraderie. Live music will be littered throughout the streets—The Fillers, Michael Pink, Eden Parker, Fancy That, The Fringe Benefit and at least 10 other live music performances to check out. Should the weather permit, a few allied businesses (Below Radar, Orange Records, Revolver, This Skate and Red Raven) will host a block party with music by DJ Stupid Birthday, Lava Proof Boots, Greenhand, live skateboard demos and more.

There are a number of surprise performances in store throughout the evening that should also be high up on your exploration agenda. We realize the dangers of such a sensory overload as this, but we are confident that you can handle it. You must move quickly though, if you are going to experience it all.

To wrap up our Downtown Student Orientation we will gather in the Black Building (118 Broadway N) around 9 p.m., as we prepare for prize announcements. There we will have live music by The Fillers and Ben Mahowald, more good food, and when it’s all over you’ll be walking away with a pocket full of free stuff, a full belly and a new found love of downtown.

*A Special thanks to Veronica Michael and her band of student organizers, as well as all participating downtown businesses. We couldn’t have done it without all of your support.
