Heatbox. A band in his mouth! This guy has elevated Bobby McFerrin and hip-hop to the heavens. Can’t be missed.

World

New Primitives. Afro-Cuban, reggae. A drum-driven band that continues to set the tone for community at the festival.

Mickey Hart Band, featuring Steve Kimock, George Porter Jr., Kyle Hollingsworth. The Master Drummer with master players.

Extra Golden. A quintet from Kenya and the U.S., offering upbeat African Benga music.

Panjea with Michael Kang. Chris Berry combines hip-hop and dancehall beats with traditional African rhythms. Sweet!

Secret Chiefs 3. Exotic multi-instrumentalists, combining Eastern and Middle Eastern sounds. Not to be missed.

New Orleans-Influenced

Bonerama. Big brass sound with four trombones and a sousaphone that rocks!

Papa Mali. A young Dr. John. Great New Orleans swamp sound!

Blues


Kelly Richey Band
. Woman blues guitarist who’s played with Sue Foley and other great blues women.

The Rhinestone Diplomats. Minneapolis band combining rock and blues. Tight and sensual.

Reggae

Dred I Dred. From Minneapolis, a fearless fusion of traditional reggae and roots music with hip hop, dancehall, jazz and blues rock. Feel the love!

Michael Franti & Spearhead. Peace activist combining blues rock with hip hop and reggae.

Rock

Tim Reynolds and T3. One of the dedicated masters of rock guitar.

Slightly Stoopid. No, this isn’t a punk band, but a blazing acoustic guitar-driven rock group.

The New Mastersounds. From England, these guys treat us to 70s-tinged original instrumentals.

White Iron Band. Those Northern bad boys are back with their own brand of Southern rock. You can’t miss hearing “Whiskey River.”

God Johnson. Jason Fladager’s killer band!

Ultraviolet Hippopotamus. Michigan’s own version of southern rock with hand drums.

The Hue. Chicago progressive rock instrumentalists.

Solution
. A pop/rock/funk band with a jam twist. Their music has been all over television.

Dead Larry. Originals mixing English rock and Zappa, from Iowa.

The Stretch. Formerly Uncle Boogie Pants, this Chicago band generates soft rock with memorable choruses, in the vein of the Eagles or America.

Funk

Deep Banana Blackout. Pulling out funk covers and originals as if Sly were here leading the band; great singers!

WBPN
. Our local jam/funk/groove band from Fargo.

Family Groove Company. A tight jazz funk band with gospel vocals and creative bass.

Kinetix. Funk and rock done with flair, from Denver. Great vocals that’ll get you up dancing.

One Under. From Columbus, Ohio, this five-piece keeps pumping out funky jam with vocals and grooving keys.

U-Melt. Funked-out jam from New York.

Gold Standard
. Jazz funk with great horns and silky vocals, from Minneapolis.

Roster McCabe. Five-piece funk band with horns!

The Twin Cats. Driving electro-jazz fusion and funk, brought to Minnesota from Indianapolis by identical twin brothers. Great horns and the bass is a killer.

Comosapiens. (Funk mixed with other genres from Moorhead)

Jam

Phil Lesh & Friends. One of the founders of jam and the Grateful Dead. What more can I say? Salaam.Salaam.

Enchanted Ape. Acoustic and electric jam with magical primate harmonies.

Moon Taxi. A Nashville progressive rock band combining Latin, reggae, bluegrass, and jazz.

Gypsyfoot. From Bismarck, cross-genre, cross-cultural jazz, funk, Latin, blues, rock,and reggae--with hand drums.

The Limns. Minneapolis band with a mix of reggae, hip-hop, funk, folk, and rock.

Blue Martian Tribe. Jams of mixed genres including blues, reggae, Latin, jazz, and Southern rock.

Springdale Quartet. Blues, jazz, and funk mixed jams, from Colorado.

Jazz

Medeski, Martin & Wood, with John Scofield. Always a treat to the ear. This time with the jazz guitar great, John Scofield, getting back to jazz rock.

The Bad Plus. With roots in Minnesota, this New York power trio will keep you jazz aficionados grooving. Tasty.

Redux. From NY, these guys have gone through more changes than a chameleon at a crayon factory. They deliver an intense conversation between guitar and keys that’s not to be missed!

Bill Smith. Nobody in the band is named Bill or Smith, but these guys cook up some mean acid jazz laced with bluegrass and rock.

Bluegrass/Acoustic

Leftover Salmon. Eclectic bluegrass like only these greats can bring.

Cornmeal. The bluegrass idiom used to reflect the conscience of the country. Great high energy band from Chicago.

The Waybacks
. These guys from California, Texas and Washington mix bluegrass, rock, and Eastern European styles. Strong on lyrics.

Pert Near Sandstone. Those Minneapolis-St. Paul favorites make their 10KLF debut this year. Hot instrumentals and vocals around one or two mics.)

Singer/Songwriter

JJ Grey & MOFRO. This Northern Florida boy has a new sound that’s so earthy with a taste of swamp blues.

The Wood Brothers. Raw roots originals from Chris and Oliver Wood. Chris even sings! Outstanding!

Teddy Presberg. Small label producer himself, this cat lays down jazz, soul, and funk.

Jpetty (All Good Things). From Milwaukee, original storytelling and sometimes musical backup added on the spot.

Techno/Trance/Dance/Electronic/Trip Hop/Metal/Rap/Hip Hop

Lotus. Great mix of techno/electronica, stirred not shaken, with a fantastic light show.

EOTO. Jason Hann and Michael Travis from SCI in new breakbeat, trip-hop, house, and drum n’ bass project.

Dub Trio. From Brooklyn, metal with a trance dance edge combined with hip-hop.

The Histrionic. A drums, bass, and keys trio that’s taken electronic/progressive trance/funk/hip-hop beats and mixed them with Latin, rock, and funk. The drums also use built-in electronics.

Sovereign Sect. These guys bring electronic and traditional musicians together with scratchers and MCs.

Lynx. Sultry female singer/rapper from Boulder with a voice so expressive you wonder why she needs to rap!

Tribute Bands

Dark Star Orchestra. Channeling the Dead note for note with vintage instruments and amps.

Phix. It’s finally happened. A band that recreates Phish.
