Comic-Con Film Previews

The San Diego International Comic Book Convention (Comic-Con) is quite possibly the single most popular convention around. Every year the convention showcases some of the most impressive new and old from the geek itinerary and inventory, everything from comic books, science fiction/fantasy, film/television and all in between. This year’s Comic-Con has made some rather interesting reveals, and as a film-fan myself, here are some of the highlights.

First, it was a great year for film revelations. Charlize Theron promoted Ridley Scott’s supposed Alien-prequel “Prometheus” by revealing the first official movie still and a featurette/trailer for the film itself. Scott narrated the footage, simply stating, “basically, I just want to scare the shit out of you.” Scott was not present for the panel, as he is still in Iceland filming. “Prometheus” is scheduled to open on June 8th, 2012.

Steven Spielberg caused quite a stir when he announced he is working on “Jurassic Park 4.” “We have a story,” the famous filmmaker said, “We have a writer working on the script, and I think we will see a ‘Jurassic Park’ in our foreseeable future, probably in the next two or three years.” Spielberg was recently awarded the Inkpot Award for his achievements in making science fiction movies over the years.

Spielberg was joined by surprise guest Peter Jackson to promote the upcoming CGI feature “The Adventures of Tintin,” scheduled for a Christmas release. A few minutes of footage from the film itself was shown to the cheering crowd. The story follows Tintin (voiced by Jamie Bell) in his search for a lost shipwreck along with his ever-faithful terrier Snowy. Spielberg stated that “we wanted the movie to look like the drawings in the Herge albums. We wanted to honor Herge by using animation to get as close as we could to the characters he invented.”

It was also announced that a live-action Voltron movie is now in the works. Atlas Entertainment’s Roven and Richard Suckle (who worked on “The Dark Knight” and “The International” respectively) will team up with Kickstart Entertainment’s Jason Netter (Wanted) to produce the film. “It’s incredibly gratifying to officially announce the development of the live-action Voltron movie this week,” Roven Suckle said, “I know there’s a lot of rumours and speculation about this movie, so it’s great to finally confirm to all the Voltron fans everywhere that we’re coming for them.”

Needless to say, this year’s Comic-Con was an excellent venue for showcasing upcoming films. We have much to look forward to in the upcoming years, as vanguards of the genre like Spielberg continue to pump out new and exciting things, and fan favorites such as Scott make their glorious return to the genre after many years doing other things. Let’s hope that there is no stopping.
