Can’t get enough of the Coen brothers’ 1996 classic that turned Fargo from a North Dakota city into a household word around the world? Like the idea of seeing a 15th anniversary screening of “Fargo” in Fargo and on Fargo? Then mark your calendars for Thursday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 pm, when a free showing of the movie “Fargo” is scheduled to play on the north side of the Radisson Hotel. The picture will be projected on the outside wall of the hotel while the movie’s audio will be broadcast simultaneously on WDAY AM 970. It’s all part of “Fargo Fest,” a downtown movie event that is the brainchild of Fargo advertising agency H2M.
Hoping to insure that the event can occur each year, H2M has partnered with the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitors Bureau and Forum Communications Company. Fargo Fest kicks off at 4:30 p.m. on the final Thursday of this month (also the day of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah!), with various vendors and entertainment. Included in the festivities will be food, crafts, a beer garden and live DJ at the Pickled Parrot, as well as the notorious original woodchipper from the movie. Kroll’s Diner will be holding auditions for a chance to become the next Kroll’s Lady.
“We wanted to create an event that celebrates both the city and the movie,” said Dan Altenbernd of H2M. “Our goal is to make Fargo Fest an annual event that movie enthusiasts everywhere will look forward to.”
Street closures will be in effect along select streets downtown. Fifth Street North will be closed from 2nd Avenue North to 4th Avenue North, and 3rd Avenue North will be closed from Broadway to near the Fargo Police Station. Seating areas will be available within the closures, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
“I feel residents have embraced what makes Fargo unique, and I encourage everyone to bring their best Fargo accent for a night of Fargo fun,” said Altenbernd.
