An intimate evening with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra

January 18th, 2017

While there have been lulls in the unforgiving temperatures now and again, this winter in Fargo has been a bitterly cold one, with below-zero temperatures for sometimes a week at a time. It is in this frigid weather that the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra offers a reprieve with its third concert in the 2016-2017 Masterworks Series sponsored by Sanford Health, “The Intimate Tango.”

In keeping with the more “personal” feel that FM Symphony Orchestra executive director Linda…

Compared to a Phantom godheadSilo Hasn’t Left the Noise Behind … Yet

January 13th, 2017

godheadSilo might have just played its last show ever in Fargo.

Or maybe not.

But, yes, they probably did.

Though you never know.

Talking separately to godheadSilo members, Dan Haugh and Mike Kunka, you get a different outlook on where the band is headed, though nobody can say for sure.

“I just consider it like AA, and go one day at a time,” said godheadSilo drummer, Dan Haugh. “We got offered shows on the east coast. So it was like, OK. January. Let’s do three shows in North Dakota,…

Quiet and mighty

January 11th, 2017

“We got up out of the Midwest and went all the way down as far away as we could go and then sometimes like-minded people find each other. That’s just kind of how it went.” Says David Huckfelt of the indie folk band The Pines.

Huckfelt and fellow frontman and songwriter Benson Ramsey are both Iowa natives with strong roots in the Iowa folk scene--yet they happened to meet one fateful night while both living in Tucson Arizona. Though they had similar interests and ran in similar…

Brütälür melts faces despite winter cold

January 11th, 2017

It’s not every day that I get declared an honorary member of a metal band, despite the fact that I don’t play any instruments. However, the three members of local Fargo metal act Brütälür saw fit to honor me with that status. Great times were had by this metalhead and the band members as we had drinks and waxed on about the band, heavy metal in general, and the upcoming concert on Saturday, January 14 that they would be performing with their openers: the newly-premiered Fargo…

Fargo Moorhead Gay Men’s Chorus: holiday concert and then…New York City!

December 7th, 2016

The Fargo-Moorhead Gay Men’s Chorus (FMGMC), founded in 2013, will soon be bringing their musical talent to Lincoln Center in New York City. For the relatively new chorus, this is just as big a deal as it sounds.

The FMGMC’s next event is its annual Holiday Concert, “I Heard the Bells,” Sunday, December 11th at 2 pm at the Sanctuary Events Center. According to the FMGMC Steering Committee President, Adam Johnston, the annual holiday concert is “the highlight of each FMGMC…

Honky tonk hero

November 30th, 2016

Minot-based musician Jeremiah James Sanderson has always loved music. In fact he came from a musical family. His mother sang in churches throughout the northern part of the state, and once he was old enough he joined her. Later as an adult he relocated from the Magic City to Idaho. Though, unlike many young musicians he didn’t spend his youth playing in bands.

“My music career was bookended by tragedy, I didn’t buy a guitar, start writing songs, or start playing until I was about…

Bold rock & blues: Bolder Shades of Blue at Speck’s Bar

November 22nd, 2016

Jamestown-based Bolder Shades of Blue make their Fargo premiere at Speck’s Bar November 25 and 26, playing what lead vocalist Tamara Dallman describes as “energetic blues with a classic rock twist.”

Donald Klontz is an avid fan of live music, particularly blues, and follows many bands and local jam sessions. He describes Bolder Shades of Blue as having “a very good, tight sound as a unit” and he appreciates their repertoire mostly focusing on blues styles. Donald adds, “And…

The Vagabond lifestyle

November 16th, 2016

To say that Davina Sowers, the lead singer, songwriter, pianist, and namesake of the Twin Cities based band Davina and the Vagabonds is class, sass, and everything in between would be stating the obvious. The audience at The Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes will witness this first hand as Davina and the Vagabonds share the stage with fellow Twin Cities-based musician Jack Klatt this Friday.

Though the show starts at 7pm, DJ Sean McPherson of The Current

F-M Symphony guest artist: classical guitarist Berta Rojas

November 9th, 2016

When you think of an orchestra, what string instruments come to mind? Chances are the first two to come into your head are violins and cellos. In many cases, that’s not terribly far from the truth. Even FM Symphony Orchestra executive director Linda Boyd readily admits, “Orchestras tend to stick to popular instruments,” and the order of the day is usually violins, cellos, and various kinds of horns and woodwinds.

An instrument like the guitar more often brings up associations…
