Deadly Duo Rocking the Hub

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Hollywood Undead will appear together Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at The Venue in Fargo. The tour has RJA supporting their second studio release, “Lonely Road,” and HU supporting their first major label release, “Swan Song.”  I had a chance to catch up with RJA’s lead singer, Ronnie Winter, and J Dog from HU, to discuss what is happening with their bands and what Fargo can expect from the show.

The Ladies of 10k

With around 100 artists playing this years 10,000 Lakes Festival, the first thing you may notice — well, if you’re like me and read way more into things than needed — is the minimal amount of female artists performing.

It’s really not that surprising that there’s a tilt in the line-up, as male artists in popular music have always been more abundant, but compared to other festivals like Bonnaroo and Coachella it’s even more obvious. Why there are so few in the jam scene is hard to say, luckily the three main female artists at this year’s festival are quite good.

Junior Brown: An Uncommon Guitarist

Junior Brown, a country icon, may not be the first act you’d think of to play at a highly touted jam event — the 10,000 Lakes Festival in Detroit Lakes MN later this month — but, Junior Brown will most definitely be someone these music fans will want to hear.

Look out your windows, folks, I think it’s Spring—and a great Memorial Day Weekend ahead. Start celebrating tonight with some live music. There’s great stuff everywhere. Catch the father/daughter duo the Diers at Porpoura right after work or the Downtown Horns at Southgate later. Little Donny & the Groovetones is heating up the Long Haul and those North Country troubadours, Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank, will be at the Crosstown chilling everyone out to some great grooves.

And, don’t forget later this week on Thursday: The Ranchhands at the Long Haul and Corey Stevens with Little Bobby and the Storm at the Empire.

The party never stops here in River City. There are a ton of great bands this week at your favorite drinking establishments this week. Grand Forks dynamite cover band, Fire, is back at Charlie Brown’s, and Deliverance returns to the Diamond. Thunder Ridge from Hillsboro will rock the Long Haul and the Southgate Lounge will introduce a new band to the area, Highwire.

Speaking of new talent, if you’re into indie rock/punk, check out the SbS CD Release Party above Gily’s Bar on Saturday. Due for a Verdict will be punching out cuts from their new CD and band friends Inkedindecision, Symbiont, and Trenches of Paris will be helping them celebrate. Show starts at 9 pm.

And a look ahead: Make sure you get tickets for the Corey Stevens, Little Bobby and the Storm show at the Empire at the end of the month. There will be a live DVD shot at the show so get there early to make your mark in music history.

It’s Springfest on Saturday, brought to you this year by the Rhombus guys. Bands playing are Reconcile (rock), North Valley Ramblers (newgrass), Still Fighting It (jazz/rock covers), and Colie Paulson (acoustic country/pop covers). There’s a fest afterparty at the Long Haul Saloon, serving up Whiskey Vaccine and Identity 5. It’s Identity 5’s CD release party.

As a prelude to that musical craziness, you can check out two events that will be competing downtown. The first is Dylan vs Cash, which is pitting eight bands on a single night to produce their takes on tunes from musical legends Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. The band will offer everything from newgrass to blues to rock to punk to folk. (North River Ramblers, Dewayne Wakeman and Ron Franz, Hasty Ladies, Noblemen(formerly Wheat Missle), June Panic and Wife, House Guitars, Andrew McCabe, Peatmoss), Muddy Rivers, 9 pm, $4 advance, $5 door

The other event is the Heatbox CD release party at the Crosstown. Nick “The Feelin” Mrozinski will open, $5 with a free beer! It’s a tough choice since my husband’s playing the Dylan vs Cash event.

Plus, there’s a shipload of dance bands hitting the area at all of the local watering holes, including Great Outdoors at the Diamond.
