Those freethinking, musical non-conformists, Enchanted Ape, are returning to the Crosstown Lounge in Grand Forks this Friday.  They are showcasing their new album, Off the Ground, which came out this past Spring.

Their non-genre-specific musical style allows them to develop their individual and collective creativity, switching easily from roots to blues to jazz.  Their lineup of musicians has expanded and contracted over time, with musician friends sitting in at every turn. Vocally and lyrically driven by front man Chris O’Brien (acoustic and slide guitar), the band is supported by passionate players. Pat Riddle’s electric guitar noodling and vocal harmonies add color, as does Brad Danielson’s hand percussion and Adam Kuchelmeister’s drums. Rob Bruce lays down the bass foundation and contributes vocally.

Enchanted Ape offers a great show with slick guitar work, great vocals, and songs that you’ll be singing long after you stumble to your car. With roots in acoustic storytelling and blues, the band also has a generous sprinkling of renegade rock, gypsy whine, and amazing layers of tribal percussion. Their new album is chock full of more laid-back music, relying on blues notes and Southern roots.
It has been my pleasure to watch this band develop from a gathering of players who got together to have a good time and occasionally writer a clever tune to a road-honed band that is producing intelligent songs with tight instrumentation.  It is no wonder that they have been repeatedly asked back to the 10,000 Lakes Festival.

Come on down to the Crosstown for a generous helping of their music, get into the dance groove, and buy yourself and your friend a copy of Off the Ground.  You will be very glad that you did!
