Everything DL has to offer

This Fourth of July weekend, the Detroit Lakes area welcomes the High Plains Festival for its first year. While the main entertainment will be at Soo Pass Ranch, DL has much more to offer concertgoers. The Fourth of July weekend is a popular time for celebration in Detroit Lakes, and the High Plains Festival is one of many attractions.  Whether you long for good food, fine drink, or unique leisure, you can find it here.

For those out of town, a place to stay is no problem. Soo Pass Ranch offers fun camping right on the festival grounds. Bring a tent and stay a while!

Once you have your base set up, come out and have fun at the concerts. The High Plains Fest is bringing in music for everyone from the roots rock of The Further Adjustments to Sovereign Sect’s danceable funk. The fun doesn’t begin or end there, however; there’s plenty more in store in Detroit Lakes.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and the Main Street Diner on Washington Avenue serves the most important breakfast in Detroit Lakes. With low prices, hearty servings and good food all across the menu, it’s the perfect start to your day.

After breakfast, wait thirty minutes like Mom always said, then hit the beach. Detroit Lakes is locally famous for its beaches and lake-based activity. Go swimming on our public beaches, rent watercraft of many varieties at the local marina, dry off in the city park or play a quick round of frisbee golf at our nearby course, all within walking distance of each other.

Need to refuel? Look no further than the famous original Zorbaz, located right on the beach on West Lake Drive. Pizza and Mexican food are the two specialties of this local favorite, and they do them well, if sometimes oddly (peanut butter pizza? Don’t knock it till you try it).

Back closer to Soo Pass Ranch, Highway 59 will take you to the Shady Hollow Flea Market. Handmade clothes and jewelry, rare memorabilia and knick knacks of all sorts populate the booths; digging is always half the fun.

Before heading back to the festival, you should check out Bleachers Bar and Grill just past Soo Pass Ranch. With delicious burgers and cold drinks, it’s a perfect compliment to a day out in DL. After that, it will be just about time to head back to Soo Pass and catch the concerts. Hour after hour of good music awaits from Friday through Sunday, sponsored by the High Plains Reader and Summit Brewing Company.

While the music ends on July 3, I recommend you stay around at the campground for the two days afterwards to enjoy the many parties and the spectacular lakeside fireworks display. You could come to Detroit Lakes this weekend for great music and camping; who wouldn’t? I also recommend you try and take in all that this community has to offer. With food, drink and recreation for everyone, it’s more than just a nice venue.
