Gwar: Space Wars and Cosmic Travels

Theatrical heavy metal band Gwar will be taking a break from their intergalactic journey to open for Lamb of God on October 10th at the Venue at the Hub.  Not only is this their 25th Anniversary Tour, but they are also supporting their newest album ‘Lust in Space’ released August 18, 2009 on Metal Blade Records.

Last year’s tour, all about the presidential election, treated fans to John McCain’s skinning alive, Barak Obama’s decapitation and Hillary Clinton being debreasted.  What can Fargo expect from this year’s show?
According to Oderus Urungus, ‘Lust in Space’ documents Gwar’s “recent travels through outer space and our cosmic struggle against that intergalactic asshole Cardinal Syn…”  And continuing their 25th anniversary celebration in true Gwar form, the band recently wrapped filming for their first music video off ‘Lust in Space’ for the lead single ‘Let Us Slay’.  Said Urungus, “’Let Us Slay’ provides actual first-hand footage [that] should put an end to any speculation that we are not really from outer space…you can really see us flying around on spaceships and shit!”

In the last 25 years, Gwar has evolved from punk rock to crossover thrash.  As anyone who has listened to Gwar can attest, Gwar has a history of testing musical limits and this is most evident in their albums ‘Scumdogs of the Universe,’ ‘America Must be Destroyed’ and ‘This Toilet Earth.’  Gwar’s experimentation reached its peak on ‘Ragnarok’ and ‘Carnival of Chaos’ but their next two albums ‘We Kill Everything’ and ‘Hell-O’ would bring about their return to their original thrash metal roots.

Gwar’s manager, Sleazy P. Martini, describes their sound this way: ““In their [25 year] history, Gwar has gone through a lot of phases starting with the more punky-thrash metal stage early that’s rough and crude.  ‘Scumdogs of the Universe’ is a good one to listen to for that. For the more heavy metal type era, that would be ‘Violence Has Arrived.’ It won’t cause your stereo to melt, won’t cause your cerebral cortex to melt, and who knows, you might even enjoy it…”

Martini says Gwar is still enjoying their ‘heavy-metally’ style right now and that is the sound that Gwar brought forward on ‘War Party,’ ‘Beyond Hell’ and now, ‘Lust in Space.’

Catch Gwar October 10 at the Venue at the Hub when they open for Lamb of God and celebrate their 25th year as Gwar… knowing Gwar it will be something to remember and as they say in outer space, “Socialize, you human filth!”
