Hot Glue

The Aquarium is about to get a huff of some strong Hot Glue.
Of course, I’m not accusing anyone affiliated with the club of using inhalants. Instead, the Aquarium is hosting Hot Glue, a new group with some familiar names.
Jed Bontjas, who performs solo as Jedeye Mindfunk or with the Mindfunk All Stars, is half of Hot Glue. The other half is Anthony Burgman, of Minneapolis’ Junebug. The sound lands not necessarily between the two, but in an area where the mutual ground between the two is shown along with some new developments.
In fact, their first record is covered with infectious grooves, muted guitars, and whining funky synths, reminiscent of Roger Troutman or Rick James. The melodies, however, are catchy indie pop. The vocals have just a touch of lo-fi but an overlaid nature that is equal parts Lennon and Nate Dogg (though there’s no telling if that last one is unintentional). The lyrics alternate between a pop-Zen simplicity (“you fell in love once, but you got bored/but you can’t tell us you’re not jealous/when she’s on to another boy”) to silly, fun lines ready to please fans of the Lonely Island (“we’ll live on forever, playin’ in your room/helpin’ make babies in 3022, yeah”).
The band’s music seems to be made for a party, which is why their show on the 27th looks to be so promising. If you want to be there when it all starts for what looks like a fun run for a fun band, show up to the Aquarium next Saturday, and get ready for a mess of Hot Glue.
