HPR Songspiel: Scarborough Fair

This week’s Songspiel focuses on the song Scarborough Fair written and performed by British Folk revivalist Martin Carthy. In 1962 Carthy showed this song to Bob Dylan, which inspired him to write the song “The Girl From North Country.” Bob Dylan recorded this song with Johnny Cash and included the line, “remember me to one who lives there. She once was a true love of mine” directly lifted from Scarborough Fair. Three years later in 1965, Martin taught Scarborough Fair to another visiting American, Paul Simon.
