Local DJs Lay the Smack Down

With Labor Day weekend almost marking the end of the summer, most people tend to want to head out to the lakes one last time. However, some DJs are making quite the argument to stay in town.

DJs: Mental Floss, Star IV, Dextrious and dI:Sh will be making hips twist this Labor Day Saturday for the Labor Day Beatdown event.

Electronic music is few and far between in Fargo, and these DJs are trying to bring this different flavor back into the scene. The Labor Day Beatdown show this weekend will help bring the fun and unique sounds back into Fargo.

Ever since 1995, Travis McCollum, also know as DJ Star IV, got his first sweet taste of the DJing sounds and hasn’t looked back.

“I didn’t have any idea of electronic music,” McCollum admits, but he says since that first day he “fell in love with the music.”

Yet not everyone knows exactly what it all entails. “I always thought that it was that crazy stuff weird people listen to out in LA,” McCollum said. But in fact, electronic music and DJing is basically about throwing a party with you and your friends. Some people get into DJing simply by playing music for friends who enjoyed what they heard. It is all about having a good time.

One of the highlights of DJ Star IV’s (McCollum) career was a show where he got great feedback from the fans. “People were coming up to me giving me hugs and stuff,” he said. Star IV definitely enjoys playing strictly for the fans. “It’s nice to know you’re doing something right.”

In order to bring a little change into the Fargo music scene, DJ Mental Floss, a.k.a. Jason Mattura, thought he would try to put his own take on things and bring his own taste to the scene. “I went to some electronic events and to be honest they were super lame. I knew I could do better, so I did,” Mental Floss said.

Mental Floss’s first show brought out more than 500 people and the party didn’t stop until six in the morning. His career stretches out through over 200 shows in its 13 year span all over the Midwest.

He said, “I never expected to still be playing at this point in my life, but the booking offices haven’t stopped calling.”

With a high passion for the music and the “can’t stop won’t stop” attitude, the DJs look promising to put on quite the show on Saturday.

Put on by Red River Rising productions, The Aquarium will be hosting the 21 plus show. It is Saturday the 5th starting at 10 p.m. and costs five dollars.

Be sure to check out this up and coming style of music being flooded into Fargo this weekend. It is looking to be quite the show and those who do go usually find themselves having a good time. According to DJ Mental Floss, “When there is an event, people go all out. It’s the best.”
