Puddle of Mudd

For a little band known as Puddle of Mudd who started out with a love of music and wanting to play and be in a band, getting signed to Fred Durst’s label in 2001 made a dream come true. “I just wanted to be in a band and fortunately I get to make a living doing it, so like my hobby became my job.” remarks Wes, the lead singer for the ever-popular band.

Fred Durst not only had the record label, he was also riding high on the success of his own band Limp Bizkit which helped Puddle of Mudd launch their successful career with songs like “She F**king Hates Me.”

Throughout the years, Wes and Puddle of Mudd have released albums and have continued to tour without really knowing what was going to happen or where they were going. “We play with a lot of different artists, and we take a little bit of their artistic outlook, and so we keep jamming with every musician, and try to get a vibe of what they are doing and we try to give back to them a little bit.” says Wes, which gives them that added edge that they are their own band but they also put what others are doing to use as well, to keep the music current and to keep moving forward with what they want to create in music.

Puddle of Mudd recently released their latest album “Famous,” with two hit singles hitting airwaves already, one that Wes felt was the perfect mix of pop and rock and one that was an honest rock song. “’Psycho’ is smoking famous, it was always in my mind one of the better rockin tunes on the record.” And so far that has proven to be right with music and rock fans around the globe, as “Psycho” is one of the most requested songs on the radio today. The first single off the album was the title of the album-“Famous,” a song that the band felt was thrown in at the last minute. “It’s a good song but I don’t really get the point of it, but it was thrown in due to the powers that be,” but really not one of those songs that Wes ever thought would be part of the record.

When Wes and the boys get together to record, they take what is going on around them and life events and sit down and take a guitar and write. They take what the guitar and what life is giving them and they follow the song. Take “Psycho” for example: “Guys are crazy in general; we’re all pretty much psycho.” Says Wes, “and on the other hand, when you start going out with a really nice girl and everything is great in the beginning, the next minute things go totally insane.”

Although Wes and Puddle of Mudd don’t know what is next for them, they still plan on writing the music they write and releasing albums and touring, and bringing fans and listeners good rock and roll that is solid and honest yet with a hint of sarcasm that makes you think you know this is what rock and roll is all about. Be sure to check out Puddle of Mudd with tour mates Tyler Read and Neurosonic when they come to Fargo to the Venue at the Hub on Tuesday.
