Sevendust: A Family Reunion

Well known for their unique style of aggressive and grinding American metal, Sevendust claims influences from Metallica, Faith No More, King’s X and Living Colour. As of 2009, Sevendust has released seven studio albums: Sevendust (1997), Home (1999), Animosity (2001), Seasons (2003), Next (2005), Alpha (2007), and Chapter VII: Hope & Sorrow (2008) as well as three compilations and a box set.

Their most recent release, Chapter VII: Hope & Sorrow, includes guest appearances from Chris Daughtry and Alter Bridge members Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti. With Chapter VII: Hope & Sorrow, Sevendust felt the freedom of having formed their own record label, 7Bros Records. No longer having to be pigeonholed or told yes or no, they were able to let the music flow and the results ranged from thrashing (Inside) to mellow (The Past) to edgy (Hope), creating an album that went further than any previous, yet still a base for those to come.

The name 7Bros Records is especially appropriate as Sevendust’s songs reflect the members growing and maturing together over the last 17 years. With the return of guitarist Clint Lowery in March of 2008, the band once again has its original lineup.

According to drummer Morgan Rose, “This was extremely tough considering Sonny [the previous guitarist] is our brother and has been amazing to work with. [Sonny] didn’t do anything wrong at all; we just owe it to ourselves and all the folks that grew up with us to put our original band back together.”

Economically, touring has gotten tougher for a lot of bands lately and Sevendust is no different. Last year the band had to pass on the Mayhem Tour as according to lead singer Lajon Witherspoon, “Financially, we would’ve just—the ship had taken on water and if we had done that it would have really affected households. So we had to go down another avenue.” Luckily, the band is hitting venues for a short tour this summer, including Fargo, before they go into the studio to start recording album number eight.
