So Young and so Heavy
A year ago, brothers Sam and Zach Ficenec decided to form a screamo-black metal band with their friend, Eric Marsh, on guitar.
After writing a half-hour’s worth of original material, they sent out over three hundred messages asking bands and promoters around the area for help getting their first show. Their calls fell on deaf ears, though, as no one wanted to take the time to help out a new band.
That’s when they decided to drive forward on their own, and booked their first show at the Red Raven last May. This would be the beginning of what Fatal Intent calls “scare metal.”
All three started as members of the Red River Choir, where they got their start in music at a very young age. With a couple years still left at Fargo South High School, these three teenagers are aggressively making a name for themselves in the local underground metal scene.
Their intention is to just play, have a good time, and, according to their MySpace, “They won’t steal your virginity.”
These guys don’t take themselves too seriously, yet they know when it’s time to be professional.
Fatal Intent hasn’t been around long, but has already branched out to Grand Forks and Jamestown, after releasing a five track demo CD recorded by Bryce Niemiller of the Bryce Niemiller Project.
The Fatal Intent guys describe their music as a heavy version of Nirvana, one of their biggest influences. Sam’s unexpectedly impressive vocal style derives from Suicide Silence, while bands like Lamb of God, All That Remains, Atreyu, and Seether make a big impact on the music.
One of the most noticeable things that make Fatal Intent stand out from the rest of the bands is the frontman’s use of a double neck guitar. After doing a ton of searching on ebay for a Flying-V guitar, Sam stumbled across something he never heard of before and thought they looked bad ass. That is when he wound up getting a double neck guitar with seven strings on top and six strings on the bottom.
When asked what direction the band wants to head, drummer Zach replied, “We are actually all hoping that we can make it big. I guess we’ve all been quoting our friend Casey Watson who said at the end of our first show, ‘dude you keep playing shit like that your going to go straight to Cali-f**cking-fornia’.”
Fatal Intent can definitely hold it down when it comes to playing with more established bands in the metal scene.
Those who are interested in black metal or screamo-metal are urged to check out these rising young artists and help support their existence by picking up some merchandise the next time they get to one of their shows.

I have to say I like the fact that these guys are willing to do whatever they want to please their musical tastes. It’s new and exciting stuff. Rock on guys.
