Vintage Boom

By Diane Miller

Lucky for Fargo, we have the Moody River Band. Here we have a band that plays commonplace rock music that has a display of originality and solid musicianship from local, down to earth individuals. So in that sense, commonplace may not be the right word to use. Not only are these folks believable, they are talented. Their songwriting skills are up to par with national touring acts, but the difference is they are local and live lives like many Midwesterners, but play some fantastic, rockin’ music on the side.

This Friday, the Moody River Band will be releasing their first full-production LP, “Vintage Boom”. While the band has put an album out in the past, this one is extra special because it was recorded mostly live with vintage equipment in a killer studio. The band traveled all the way to Chicago to record at Electrical Audio, a studio that has housed bands such as Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey and Cheap Trick. The outcome of this album could very well label these guys as rock stars. Why? Because “Vintage Boom” is awesome.

This album includes two featured vocalists, Tom Peckskamp and Charlie Young. Both musicians write their own songs that display and feature their taste for classic rock and blues. They each have their own style, but they mesh exceptionally well. What I find that stands out about Charlie is that he utilizes his skillful singing voice by adding character and grit to his catchy, appealing melodies. The great thing about Tom is that he is an awesome lyricist. On top of being a poet, he drills the microphone like a soldier. What a voice! Listen to key tracks such as “Thru These Eyes” and “Macbeth” from both Charlie and Tom on the new record.

As a full band, much of what they do emulates their favorite artists such as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, and The Beatles – aka legends. While these artists are considered legends for a reason, the Moody River Band obviously does not mess
around when it comes to choosing who to follow.

As far as the total package goes, these guys are fully loaded with three guitars, bass, drums, and even horns. They all seem to have an innate sense of musicality built inside them that forms together beautifully. Oh yeah, be prepared to dance because the energy is high
and the beats are standard. No acquired taste is necessary!

Their CD release will be held in conjunction with the Fargo Beer Festival on September 30th. This will be a great opportunity for both beer and music enthusiasts to enjoy tasting some of the best brews on the market while also having the opportunity to appreciate one of Fargo’s best rock bands. This event will be held outside, so don’t miss your opportunity to enjoying the outdoors before it gets cold, Fargo style! You’re welcome for the reminder.
