100 Years is Not Enough

To the Editor:

Dr. Leah Rogne’s letter (01/12/12) credits Moorhead for “virtually” solving all its flooding problems without relying on a diversion project. As the infamous Bill Clinton saying goes, it all depends on what virtual is.

Moorhead is in the process of protecting its infrastructure to the 100 year flood level. Living where we do, it should come as no surprise to anyone when the 100 year level is exceeded at some time in the future. Given this, the citizens and officials of the F-M metro have chosen to
support a diversion that protects to the 500 year flood level.

Here is my point regarding the 500 year event: Virtually all rural Red River Valley will be flooded with or without a F-M diversion in place. It seems prudent to protect the region’s largest metro area, during a 500 year event, so it can serve as the economic base for recovery for rural inhabitants.

Readers should not infer that I am endorsing the current west alignment.
