Expanding a Tradition
A couple weeks ago HPR announced some changes taking place in our midst, one of which was the announcement of a new editor. Having said that, it is an honor to introduce myself as editor for the first time to you, our faithful readers.
I’ve been involved with the Reader for many years now in a number of capacities, and over time it has become a big part of my life and who I am. I am deeply humbled that John Strand and Raul Gomez have entrusted me with the helm of this publication, and I intend to steer it in the right direction.
The media’s biggest responsibility is to inform and stimulate the minds of the public. We live in a democracy where ideas reign supreme. It is our duty to facilitate that in every way, whether these ideas take the form of art, music, or political discussion.
The public should also be able to rely on the media to hold public officials accountable. Some call the media the 4th estate, the government’s watchdog. Whatever you choose to call it, I will uphold these philosophies to the fullest extent.
HPR has a long-standing legacy of superb columnists, intense events coverage, and a vigilant eye on social issues. This tradition would not exist, however, without our dedicated staff. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the people who make this paper what it is.
Raul Gomez, our co-owner, graphic designer, and dear friend, how could this paper run without him? The same could be said about Tom Bixby, our copy editor, who happens to have a wonderful sense of humor and speaks Portuguese beautifully.
Sales, naturally, are necessary to keeping this paper operating. With John Strand as sales director, we are confident that our sales team will reach new heights.
Finally, a special thanks to our columnists, contributors and interns. Their ideas and individuality are constantly flowing, making this paper worth reading.
There are a number of things we intend to improve on—some big, some small. One area of focus will be taking full advantage of all that our website could potentially offer. You can expect to see more live events photos, more blogs, and some top secret changes yet to unfold.
Changes are taking place within our office as well. We are utilizing new technologies to organize our work flow, ensuring a better-quality product for our readers.
We will also occasionally be opening up the editorial photo slot for submissions from readers. We encourage photographers to send us their best photos, whether they be artistic, news-worthy, or half insane. Send submissions to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
We are working hard to make this paper the best we possibly can for our readers. However, there is something we expect from you in return. Not all publications are as fortunate to have readers with such passion. Our letters to the editor are my favorite part of the Reader. They embody the true spirit of democracy, and we encourage readers to speak their minds as often as they are humanly capable of doing so.
We expect the public to speak out and stand up when necessary. You can expect us to help amplify your voice. As the new editor, I look forward to our future dialogues.
