No Nukes in the Valley

To the Editor:

Right now we have some nuclear power plants in America running at 120 percent of capacity. Many are older than their life expectancy and have been re-licensed for another 25 years. Two are on fault lines in California. Three plants are in our neighbor state of Minnesota.

Duane Sands recently wrote about building nuclear power plants in the Red River Valley. The Red River Valley is not a good location because we don’t have a good water supply for these plants. When we have draughts in the summer they can’t be quickly cooled without a steady flow of water. If we had a problem with a plant it could create a dead zone and take a lot of land out of production. Live stock in the area would need to be killed.

North Dakota has the potential of providing wind energy for a quarter of our country. This would provide green energy, new jobs and new revenue for our state. I have been told that cows do not like wind energy; they won’t go near the turbines. I hear it’s because of the noise. Or maybe because cows don’t want to fly. Do a search online for information backing my statement on ND wind energy.

Right now, Seattle is getting radiation from Japan. What about all the ocean life in between? Is this what we want for North Dakota? I think not.
