“Occupy Together” Expresses Initiative, Lacks Clarity
To the Editor,
“Occupy Together” shows people are getting involved in the political process in a deeper way. Only about half of eligible voters vote, but even fewer lobby for good government. We treat the elections like they are the biggest part of governing but that is just the start of governing. Getting in the streets and letting the people you have placed in office know how disappointed you are with the laws they are giving you is a very healthy way to participate in this democracy.
That being said, the message of Occupy Wall Street needs to better reflect what the people want. The main themes seem to be stopping corporate greed and special interests impact on the political process, economic inequality and joblessness, and fixing an unjust government. The 99% should be careful that the 1% doesn’t become the enemy. Don’t be mad at the rich. They are just following the laws in place. Be mad at the system. Be mad at the bailout of banks that ended up putting bonuses in the pockets of those that started the recession. Be mad at the system that decided corporations have the same rights as citizens but have none of the responsibilities. Be mad that loopholes have been created allowing some of our country’s billionaires to only pay 15% capital gains tax on a majority of their income. Be mad at a system that allows unlimited funds into superpacs.
Now use that anger. If any of this upsets you make your voice heard. You need to call, write and visit your representatives at all levels and tell them what you think good government looks like. This is what good citizenship looks like.
