Outrageous Bills

To the Editor:

Two outrageous bills have been introduced in Congress.

In the House, the McCarthy Bill would roll back existing land protections and put at risk
tens of millions of acres of unprotected public wilderness lands; it also would bar future administrations and congresses from protecting the lands again.

Meanwhile, the twin Barrasso Bill has come before the Senate.

The effect of these bills would be to doom wilderness and roadless areas, protected and
unprotected, all over the country. Future generations would have next to no wild places to learn
from and enjoy.

People should prod their senators and representatives to oppose the McCarthy and Barrasso
Bills, then they should keep an eye on the politicians’ subsequent behavior.

Bills have been known to sneak through while reporters are on coffee break.
