Trana Rogne: Broder’s Betrayal

To the Editor:

It is always amazing how ideology trumps reality. David Broder, January 29 in the Fargo Forum, calls the vote on the entitlement commission as a “moment of truth.”

The Senate knew the truth about the entitlement commission. They voted to EXCLUDE Social Security from the commission’s purview by a vote of 97-0.

Social Security does not contribute to the deficit; paying back the money taken by Congress does. The Pete Peterson (Conrad/Gregg) commission was intended to cut Social Security, using the debt as vehicle to achieve the cuts.

Broder’s talk of betrayal is misplaced. The Senators pushing the commission have done the betraying, a real disservice to those who pay into Social Security. The debt is real and it was caused by off budget wars, tax cuts to the rich and give away to corporations. Pete Peterson was, and is, intent on carrying out Social Security cuts. The real catastrophe is that big powerful interests and the DC punditry are still trying to control the message.
