UND Logo Supporters are all Racist?

[[Editor’s Note: Nelson is referring to the editorial ran in the 06-23-11 issue of HPR.]]

Dear Editor:

So Editor Cindy Gomez-Schempp considers all those who support UND keeping the Fighting Sioux logo and nickname to be racists. And not just any old racists, but confederate KKK yahoos to boot. Therefore when the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe voted to allow UND to keep the logo, it must have been a bunch of racists too. When the Standing Rock Sioux tribe gave formal permission to UND in 1969 to use the Sioux name and countenance forever, it seems they were also racist against themselves. If editor Cindy is correct, then the NCAA is accusing the Sioux tribes of being “hostile and abusive” to themselves.

Or we can maintain that the NCAA is simply, openly wrong in its charges against UND. Its accusations have been effectively refuted, except in the minds of the politically correct.
