Dark Sector: Throwing the Glaive
For some reason, Dark Sector slipped my mind upon release. I’m going with the “better late then never” approach.
Gameplay is hit or miss. On one hand, using the glaive (bladed throwing weapon) in addition to using guns was a total blast. I often preferred the glaive to the firearms just because it felt so cool to hack up enemies from a distance.
On the other hand, however, the story itself feels mostly like a Gears of War clone (which it pretty much is) with no real sense of self.
I honestly stopped paying attention to the story about a third of the way through the game. If you decide to pick up Dark Sector, keep in mind that it’s not really about the story, but the unique gun/glaive combos and the nonstop action.
Graphics are absolutely great. Although you will occasionally run into some shoddy-looking backgrounds that look like reject levels from GoW, the game as a whole, including character animation, is fantastic. Other than a couple of minor glitches, graphics are very good and I found nothing to really complain about.
Controls are great and take absolutely no time to learn. After about ten minutes, I was ducking in and out of cover and taking out the surprisingly intelligent enemies with the greatest of ease.
The trouble I had wasn’t really with the controls, but the fact that enemies employ a lot of the same strategy you do, causing sometimes frustrating fire fights. Basically, just take your time and you’ll be tearing through this game in no time.
All in all, even being a Gears of War clone, Dark Sector was pretty fun to play through. Like I said, don’t expect Hollywood-caliber storytelling because you’re not going to find it. Instead, take the game for what it is, a total non stop action rollercoaster ride of violence, not that I condone violence.
Worth It?
