Gratuitous Violence, Severe Injuries
Continuing the bone-breaking, fast-paced, foul-mouthed gridiron action of its predecessor comes Blitz the League 2.
Gameplay is pretty straightforward, especially if you’re familiar with the Blitz series.
Rather than being a true-to-life football sim, Blitz offers arcade style action and pace coupled with gratuitous violence.
During any given run, a player can be hit so hard it causes severe injury; all displayed in a Hi-Def 3-D model of the human body, showing just what kind of damage has been done. This is easily the best part of this game. The over-the-top injuries fill that need in the player who thinks football should be just a little more violent.
The main feature in the game is campaign mode, where you take control of the latest football phenom on his way to the top of the division. During campaign mode you are able to select your player’s offensive and defensive positions, as well as customize his stats by answering several questions during the post-draft conference.
You then take your team through the ranks, starting at the bottom of division 3 all the way to the top of division 1.
Campaign mode will keep you highly entertained with all of the off-field shenanigans and variety of goodies to unlock.
The graphics are really hit-and-miss. On one hand the players, weather effects and generally everything on the field looks super good and glossy.
But the fans, refs, and even the cheerleaders look like they were taken from Blitz 2001 on the N64 from back in the day. I really think that with today’s gaming standards we’d have a better looking and more realistic game on our hands right now.
Controls are where Blitz falls flat on its face. First on my list is hit detection. On more than one occasion I have gone for a big tackle, only to find my player slide right off the opponent’s back. It wouldn’t even acknowledge that I indeed clipped that guy’s shoulder. This is just bad programming; no one should have to put up with this frustration.
Another problem is avoiding tackles. Sure, you can juke and stiff arm but what good are these features when they are never consistent. Even in clash mode (think something like bullet time for football) these dodging techniques are totally unreliable.
When all is said and done, Blitz: the League 2 is fun for the arcade football fan. If you prefer the likes of Madden please stick with that. If you want over-the-top action that only the creators of Mortal Kombat can provide, give Blitz a spin.
