The Health Care of the Future, Now

Imagine what health care is going to look like 50 to 60 years from now. With chiropractor John Toft, owner of Functional Medicine Chiropractic Center, you won’t have to try very hard. John not only uses the healing techniques of chiropractic care to treat you, but also the wisdom of Functional Medicine and a tool called Applied Kinesiology.

High Plains Reader: How did you get the name of your business and what does Functional Medicine mean?

John Toft: My facility was named after the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). The IFM is implementing a new and revolutionary model of health care for the 21st Century.

There is a new scientific roadmap your doctor isn’t telling you about. It allows you to treat the real underlying causes of disease rather than simply suppressing symptoms with medications.
The new roadmap is called Functional Medicine and is grounded in a new scientific field: systems biology seeks to understand how systems in the body are related and interconnected as a network, rather than simply a series of organs and body parts that have no relationship to one another.

Functional medicine is the medicine of WHY. It provides a road map for understanding the root causes of disease. Put another way, what are the underlying causes of disease? Answering that question must be your focus if you want to reverse disease.

We are currently experiencing an absolute revolution in how the body’s health and function are understood and treated. Chronic diseases of aging such as adult onset diabetes, heart problems, stroke, inflammatory autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and even cancers (and the list goes on…) are now much more clearly understood with this new model of Functional Medicine.
HPR: Interesting. So, is it safe to say that as a chiropractor you not only work on patients who have back issues, but also with them to assist in disease prevention and healthcare maintenance?

JT: Yes, definitely. I believe that health is much more than the absence of disease.  Evidence from scientific literature and my success treating patients clearly show that many diseases are reversible. This is especially true if they are caught early and treated with an aggressive approach to lifestyle intervention, nutritional support, and, OCCASIONALLY, medications.

To have ultimate health and vitality, we must look at the health of the entire body, and make changes to the body and to individual organ systems that are not functioning optimally while still respecting and understanding how the whole body functions together in health and disease.

One of my primary goals when working with patients is to help them maintain body, mind, and spirit balance so they are able to naturally heal and prevent disease.
HPR: You also work with Applied Kinesiology. What is that and how does it work?
JT: I work with an advanced application of Applied Kinesiology manual muscle testing. Extreme Kinesiology (XK) manual muscle testing literally allows us to ask the body what it needs, how to provide for those needs, and if the body wants something or anything more. In XK, we use kinesiological manual muscle testing to communicate directly with the innate intelligence that is responsible for the ongoing state of the entire body. XK allows the practitioner to evaluate and treat the exact needs of the body, bringing together all of a physician’s knowledge and skill sets.

This model of health care is on the cutting edge, and is showing unimaginable successes in pilot programs currently being studied throughout the country. Current data from pilot programs (Alternative Medicine Inc.) is showing a 60% reduction in overall health care costs.  Projections from leading researchers predict we may save even more of all health care costs if and when this model of health care is fully implemented.
HPR: What is a typical first visit with you like?

JT: The first visit is getting to know a person. It has been said that 90% of a diagnosis is gathered from the history, for example, if a person comes in with muscle and joint problems, to then show them how fixing muscles will stabilize the alignment problems in three to five visits with long-term outcomes. With the Functional Medicine work, we just have to find what the body needs nutritionally and find out if food allergies or toxicities are reducing health.
HPR: What brings you the greatest joy in your work?

JT: I get giddy inside when I see my patients respond in such positive ways; much more positive than can be had by any other forms of health care. The answers we get by using the Applied Kinesiology muscle testing make the difference.  I also get great joy out of showing people how this works. I like to say that, “seeing is believing”. I enjoy doing public demonstrations and workshops for people to witness the work that I so passionately support.
HPR: Anything else you’d like readers to know?

JT: With my 25 years of experience of Chiropractic, along with my 20 years of study and practice of Functional Medicine, and most especially, my 13 years of practicing Applied and now Extreme Kinesiology, I am quite confident that I am uniquely qualified and positioned to provide for the highest needs of my patients to maximize health, vitality and years of disease-free living.
