The Ick Factor

By Micara Link
Staff Writer

Spring brings forth a time of renewal, rebirth, transformation, and growth. As Mother Nature shifts from the cold stillness of winter to the budding and expanding energy of spring, it only makes sense that people begin shifting, too. Spring is a great reminder to embrace change. As the earth thaws and melts away the old, it coaxes us to do the same. The vitality of rebirth awaits us as we rediscover and transform more fully into our complete selves.

Right now, in the heart of spring, I encourage you to let go of the old and welcome in the new. The old mental patterns, emotional baggage, physical fatigue, unsupportive friends and family, and energy-zapping activities: all are what I call The “Ick” Factor, more briefly described as anything in your internal or external environment that is disempowering or stifling. It is my intention to help you get in touch with your inner ick-radar so you can identify what in your life is holding you back and keeping you from living your life to its full potential.
Here are a few areas to begin with.

Your Mind

Begin to take notice of your thoughts. What types of words do you use? Are they empowering, positive, and in alignment with your desires? Do you have a to-do list that never seems to get done? Does your mind race like a hamster on a wheel?

Suggestions for increased mental clarity:

1. Take time each day to bring yourself into the present moment by placing your attention on your breath. As you become more aware of your breath, feel the tension float away and your mind begin to slow. Give your mind permission to relax and take a break. Send gratitude to your mind for its functions and capabilities, acknowledging all the wonderful work your mind does for you.

2. Take Action! If you’re one of those people with a never-ending to-do list, make a commitment with yourself to complete those tasks. Once they are done, they will be out of sight, out of mind. Ahh, clarity!

3. Choose the thoughts and language you use. When you change your language, you change your life. You have control over the words you think and say so choose the good ones! Replace self-defeating, limiting thoughts with self-loving and uplifting ones. There is a positive side to everything, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time. All it takes is for you to look for it and soon enough you’ll find it!

Home Environment

Our surroundings have a profound effect on our energy levels and psyche. Your home is your sanctuary, a place for you to feel safe, nurtured, and secure. If your home is cluttered, messy, and unorganized, there’s a good chance that it brings your energy down and creates some “Ick” in your life. How do you feel at home? Do you feel safe? Do you feel it is your personal sanctuary? Does being in your home bring you a sense of peace and relaxation?

Suggestions to increase clarity in your environment:

1. Start by getting rid of anything you no longer use. A good rule of thumb to go by is, “If you don’t love it or use it, get rid of it!”

2. Once you’ve cleared your space, it’s time to organize everything you decided to keep. Make it fun! Use colored organizers and play upbeat music while you do this. It doesn’t have to be a chore.

3. After you’re all done clearing and organizing, spend some time blessing each room. Send gratitude to your home and ask that love fill your space to create an environment that is sacred and special just for you.

Hobbies and Free Time

It’s important to give yourself a break, have fun, relax, and let go. But it’s also important to choose hobbies and activities that actually feel like a break and not like more work. How do you spend your free time? Do the activities you choose energize you or create more stress in your life? Do you spend time each day relaxing and having fun?

As a suggestion, make a commitment to yourself to schedule time for fun each day and stick with it. Don’t give in and schedule something in place of your “me time” if something comes up. It’s just as important as anything else and you deserve to have a little more fun in your life! So go for it! Let loose, get jiggy with it. I don’t care, just have fun!

Your Body

Everything you put into your body provides some type of fuel. Become aware of the types of fuel you choose. Does your body feel better or worse after consumption? Do you reach extreme highs and extreme lows by consuming sugar and caffeine?

Suggestions for increased physical clarity:

1. Drink more water! How much water does your body need per day? Here’s a simple formula to help you out: Body Weight (lbs.) / 2 = minimum ounces of water per day.

2. Eat accordingly to your nutritional needs rather than emotional needs.

3. Do at least 15 minutes of physical exercise every day.

People

The people we choose to surround ourselves with can dramatically affect our lives. Are your friends supportive of you? Do they encourage you and help you see your beauty? Notice how you feel around your friends. Do they bring your energy up or do they bring it down? Being aware of how the people in your life affect you is the first step in either recreating the relationship to better serve you, or else allowing the relationship to go separate ways. This is not always an easy area to clear, I understand that, but remember, you deserve to have loving and supportive people in your life. Don’t settle. It’s not worth it.

Congratulations on taking time out of your day to think about these areas of your life. I applaud you for this first step! You have my love and support as you continue to let go of all that makes you go “Ick.”
