The founder, lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the punk rock band Against Me!. Debut solo studio album, Stay Alive, 2020. One of the first highly visible rock musicians to come out publicly as transgender. Her description of gender dysphoria: “…a feeling of misalignment. Where the gender you feel (internally) doesn’t match up with your assigned gender at birth. When you’re too young to know what it is, it turns into shame…The cliché is that you’re a woman trapped in a man’s body, but it’s not that simple. It’s a feeling of detachment from your body and from yourself. And it’s shitty, man. It’s really fucking shitty.”
