Pour one out for Harold’s fifth anniversary

Music | July 18th, 2024

By John Showalter

In the several years since its owners purchased what was once Main Avenue Auto in Moorhead, Minnesota in 2019, Harold’s on Main has quickly transformed from the new kid on the block to a Moorhead fixture. Not even a pandemic that seemed to put the world on pause was able to drive them off the rails. What started as just a bar now regularly hosts outside concerts, vinyl nights, and karaoke, among other events. On July 27, Harold’s will be celebrating its fifth anniversary with a killer lineup of bands as well as other activities that are yet to be announced at the time this article is being written.

“We love Harold’s” said Zander Ness, the promoter of the event. Ness has been an active musician in numerous bands in the Fargo-Moorhead area since 2001, as well as having promoted his fair share of shows, several of which have been at Harold’s on Main.

In addition to promoting the anniversary event, Ness will also be performing with his current band Zero Place. He describes their music as “post-grunge alternative rock with a bit of a heavier and darker, emotional edge.” He started recording what would be the band’s first album “Never Feel Again” in fall 2019 as a solo project, but after realizing he wanted to return to playing live shows he recruited members and started playing concerts with them in 2020. Since then, Zero Place has played numerous live shows, recorded an album and four singles, and released two music videos, and will be releasing a new album titled “Darko” this fall.

“We have performed at Harold’s several times over the last few years and have had a really great experience every time,” Ness said. “The professionalism, hospitality and organization are all above and beyond.”

Of course, Zero Place is not the only band that will be performing that night. “Our friends in a great band called Wish Wash from Minneapolis will be on tour again and since they had such a good time at the show I booked them for last year at Harold’s, we decided to do it again,” said Ness. “The Harold’s owners then decided to make the night of the show their fifth anniversary celebration, which added huge meaning behind the event that we are all very grateful and excited for. There will be food vendors and other activities during the day as well.” In addition to Zero Place and Wish Wash, local bands Disappear Forever and Loum will be in the lineup.

“The owners and staff are all amazing. Since it is a limited/seasonal outdoor venue, it makes every show there special and memorable. We love that it is a place where adults can enjoy themselves but is also safe and fun for people of all ages,” said Ness. “It is very important to have places where all ages are welcome and able to experience live music and arts in a safe and supportive environment. We hope to see all the regular show-goers as well as some new faces so please spread the word and help us celebrate five years of this awesome establishment!”
