Art show at the Nest! Art show at the Nest!

Yes. A public, all-ages art show is happening at a private, warehouse-type indoor skate park this Saturday. It’s called the Hawk’s Nest Freak Out.

Meld by Don Renner

There are two unifying connections between all the artists: 1) They are all local, 2) They all make “bizarre,” “weird” and “creepy” art. That’s according to the curator, Colby Nelson, also known as the artist Ghost Pyramid.

These artists are Dustin Finnicum (Omega Knifemare), Punchgut, Justin Seng, Shannan Ranae Gorden, Alison Buecksler, Jay Fox, Don Renner and Nelson. Also, Travis McCollum will DJ.

While some of them have recognizable names in the art community, others are fairly new. Nelson said exposing new or underrepresented artists has been a major focus of this show.

“Doing art shows (helps to) promote yourself to other people, to other artists, and to meet up with other artists and share your stuff with them,” Nelson said. “Maybe you can inspire them to do different stuff and they can inspire you as well. Or maybe you can get other shows from it.”

The other major purpose of this event is to provide a stark alternative to the traditional art show.

“This is definitely not a white-walls gallery show,” said Tom Kemmer, owner of the Hawks Nest. “Fargo needs more of that … it’s just a different way to display art in a different space.”

Nelson added, “It’s a more ambience kind of setting – like the rough kind of world we live in with music and skateboarding – a kind of unorthodox thing.”

Indeed, a number of the artists in the show are or have been skateboarders, including Renner, Seng and Buecksler. And all the artists have different day jobs, like bartending or something business-related. Really, this is just one way to combine the interests of similar, yet different subcultures.

“We’ve built the space to do these things specifically, to have music shows, to have arts shows, to do fundraisers, barbeques,” Kemmer said.

“And the whole thing is encompassing because skateboarders aren’t just skateboarders. They are artists. They are musicians … They are always into something else, something weird, something fun.”
