The Body in motion

Music | June 1st, 2016

At a young age Lee Buford and Chip King never thought they would be travelling across the United States and Europe to perform. The Body has come a long way and keeps growing more and more each day. Performing at new music festivals and exploring new genres has helped The Body grow as a band.

Chip and Lee started The Body back in 1999. King is the singer and Buford plays the drums. The duo have been good friends for many, many years. In the beginning the band named their music style as “sludge”. Sludge is a term for slow metal music. As the years have gone on, the two have added more depths to their style. One example was by adding more instrumentals with each album.

Not only do they tour throughout the United States but also in Europe and Canada. Since Buford does not enjoy flying, they travel by car everywhere they go. Buford says that King does most of the touring throughout Europe. Residing in Portland, it is easier for them to travel together throughout Canada and the states.

I asked Buford, “What do you want your listeners to get out of your music?” Buford responded with, “I want each listener to interpret their own thing and I hope they get at least something out of the music.” That is almost every recording artists hope. Buford has always said to do your own thing and enjoy while doing it. If you enjoy what you are doing, you will never have to work a day in your life.

It always varies with time for them to create albums but on average it takes the duo about five to six days to complete. Sometimes it is hard to write a new track but collaborating is always the best part. Everyone has new ideas to bring to the table and if it was not for those ideas the band would not create the music they do today. Lately, the duo have had influences of slow hip-hop such as Travis Scott and The Weeknd.

Since the duo do not live to far from each other, in their spare time they enjoy jamming out. Having those jam sessions really let the worries go and help create new tracks. They also love having their friends and girlfriends around and to hang out with.

The Body will be performing at The Aquarium on June 7th. Since the release of their new album “No One Deserves Happiness”, they have set out to make the “grossest” pop album of all time. The Body has become a much sought-after collaborator in a number of genres. This show in the Fargo area is part of their tour out to Durham, NC, where they will be performing at Moogfest.

I will leave you with this quote from Metal Injection, “It is a magnificent and a heavy record that feels like a demonic dance album and exists as a great disconnect from the prototypical metal album.”
