Ludonarrative: what now?

September 28th, 2016

In 2011, Bethesda released “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” an open-world action-adventure game putting players in control of the Dragonborn, a hero blessed with a dragon’s soul. I clocked a significant number of hours playing Skyrim and remember my experience with the game fondly.

The question remains though, why did the citizens of Skyrim still treat their hero as a common drifter? By the end of the game I had stopped a civil war and thwarted a…

September 28th, 2016

By Faye Seidler

fayeseidler@gmail.com

With the increased visibility of transgender identities and issues, we are also seeing an increase in parents able to identify that their child may be transgender. Parenting is already a taxing, full-time job, and realizing that a child might be transgender can be a scary, heavy burden.

Most parents just want to give their child a happy life, and in this situation the best thing to do is to take a deep breath, and then do some research.

Most people…

September 21st, 2016

By Faye Seidler

fayeseidler@gmail.com

Last week I talked about the importance of having trans representation when creating any policy that affects trans lives. Here I'll be shifting the focus from trans representation to the actual policies an organization would want to look at and develop. There are several broad strategies an organization can take to be more trans-friendly, and they come with tangible benefits to the organization as a whole.

The easiest place to start is to look at the…

You just knew this had to happen

September 21st, 2016

By Chuck Solly

rcsolly@gmail.com

It seems I have been writing a lot lately about scams. Everybody wants to cheat their neighbor. I hate that...

So of course there is this: Online scammers are now targeting those who recently upgraded to Windows 10, via fake — but highly sophisticated — Windows support sites.

For those of you who are not sure about Windows 10, it is the latest (and supposedly) the greatest operating system from Microsoft. It comes installed on new desktop and laptop…

Trans Representation in Organizations

September 14th, 2016

By Faye Seidler

fayeseidler@gmail.com

Anyone who grew up in Fargo and has spent time out of the state knows that sooner or later someone will ask them if it’s just like living in the movie “Fargo.” The response to that question would take a whole article on its own, but most people living in the area have experienced this situation.

Our responses to it vary from anger, to earnest discussion, to satirical acknowledgment by saying “Oh yah, you betcha!” Sometimes it can even get…

The German Kulturfest is an event to honor that tradition. It all starts with the food,…

Does anyone remember the Encyclopedia Britannica?

September 7th, 2016

By Chuck Solly

rcsolly@gmail.com

I sure do. I used several of their volumes to flatten out things like my wrinkled 8th grade book report...I got a "C" on it anyway. I didn't mean to take you back to the dark ages -- the Encyclopedia Britannica is still a reference on the internet.

The other encyclopedia on the internet is Wikipedia. It is built on a wiki platform which means that anyone can edit it at any time.

Since this is back-to-school week, I thought I would give you a little heads up…
