Fortuna and Alkabo are the farthest towns you can drive to from Fargo and still be in the state of North Dakota.
Seven hours away in the northwest corner of Divide County, the two towns have fewer than 30 residents combined, Fortuna at 22 and Alkabo at 7. They lie as the furthermost outposts in North Dakota, but make no mistake: Interest and adventure still find outlets in the northwest corner.

Over the past several years the drone industry has grown rapidly. The origin of much of this development was in North Dakota, as hundreds of businesses flock to the area to do research and development of unmanned aircraft and their accompanying technologies. The essential capital of drone development is the Grand Forks Air Force base, which has been flying exclusively drones since 2013.
There are many commercial uses for drones. Where they may…

Chuck Klosterman poses the big questions that no one is asking in his latest book, “But What If We’re Wrong?” One of those questions regards the potential blight of football as it is known today, hundreds of years in the future.
His ninth book hit the shelves earlier this month. In it, Klosterman, the lauded pop-culture critic and North Dakota native, aims to look back at widely held beliefs in today’s society as if it were hundreds of years in the future to see…

We need bees. They pollinate, enabling plants to reproduce. The Plains Art Museum is engaged in the fourth year of a project to educate our community on the importance of bees.

According to Melissa Kossick, Communications Coordinator and Media Producer for The…

Anyone who has lived in the Fargo-Moorhead area for any amount of time is probably well aware of our infatuation with all things Scandinavian, especially the Vikings. It only makes sense, with so much of the population around here having ancestry that hails from the frozen north.
Even as someone who claims no Scandinavian heritage myself (German and Scottish), I have to admit the craze for all things Nordic is infectious, not even just here but in pop culture (Thor from the Avengers? …

Illegal tattoos in Cuba? Yes please…I’ll take one. That’s right. Tattooing is illegal in the entire country of Cuba. Not one license has ever been issued.
Tattooing has had a rough history around the world anyways but to think that nowadays we aren’t forward-thinking enough to let people decide on their own what or what not to permanently affix to their own bodies, is just ludicrous at best.
I am a big proponent of freedom of choice and maybe I have a biased opinion,…

After 10 years of presenting edgy, contemporary theatre at 716 Main Avenue, Theatre B is moving out. Their 2016-2017 season will be presented at a series of temporary venues around town. Meanwhile, the company is searching for a new permanent space to call their “forever home.”

Do you like puzzles? Perhaps at some time in the last year you have contemplated the puzzles included toward the end of every issue of the High Plains Reader. Or maybe you took part in last November’s trivia game show/podcast Rocket Surgery at Dempsey’s and The Aquarium.
Both happen to be the brainchildren of a Mr. James Osborne, affectionately referred to by many as ‘Kung Fu Jimmy’ (and in the case of Rocket Surgery, one certainly can’t neglect the huge contributions by…
