Rock the vote

Editorial | April 23rd, 2015

More than 200 nominees are up for HPR’s Best of the Best awards. Final voting is now underway. Folks can vote for their favorite local bar, artist, chef, band, restaurant and more here: bob2015.hpr1.com.

The winners will be announced at our party at the Avalon West on May 28. All are welcome at this free event. There will be live music, an awards presentation and many opportunities to network with some of the finest local business owners, artists, bartenders, restaurateurs and more.

Every year, we get asked, “Why didn’t you include insert category this year?” or “Next year, can you add insert category?” Please, continue making those suggestions. We of course value the community’s input.

If we do make any cuts, it's usually categories that have a low amount of votes. However, we also understand the importance of keeping those smaller niche categories that may not be included in other “best of” awards. For example, we’ll always keep “Best Drag King or Queen” category.

The trickiest part is keeping the amount of categories to 50 selections. There are an endless number of categories we could include like best bakery, best guitar player, best potter, best painter, best rapper, best doctor, best fitness center or best cheese selection. Though we keep the number of categories to 50 to make voting as quality and simple as possible. In the past, we’ve had up to 100 questions and a number of people would abandon the survey because it was so time consuming to fill out.

One question we’ve added to our final ballot is “What category would you like to see included in next year’s ballot?” Please make your voice heard there. You can of course email me (diane@hpr1.com), Raul (raul@hpr1.com) or John (jas@hpr1.com) too. We highly appreciate the direct contact.

Vote for a new Fargo mayor and city commissioner on April 28

Fargo’s special election day is on Tuesday. Please remember to get out and vote. The mayor and city commission make important decisions that affect lives of all those working or living in Fargo. We have the power to choose a leader who best represents the community. Let’s expand the demographics of voters on election day.

Last week we ran a questionnaire with all the candidates: (http://tiny.cc/7nqcxx). KFGO, Forum of Fargo Moorhead, Valley News Live and WDAY are valuable resources for information on the candidates as well.

All other voter information, including where to vote, how to vote early and who can vote, is available here: http://tiny.cc/fargovotes
