“Home on the Prairie” reception at Uptown Gallery

Arts | December 9th, 2015

By David McCoy

Award-winning Virginian artist Deborah Mae Broad’s wood engravings are on display and for sale at the Uptown Gallery as part of her “Home on the Prairie” show throughout the entire month of December.

Broad works with the medium of canvas painting, but she is well known for her wood-cut engravings and prints. Her depictions of animals and landscapes have brought her nationwide fame and victories at several Midwestern outdoor art fairs. She won Best of Show for her printmaking at the St. Louis Art Fair in Clayton, Mo.

A background of equitation studies, a master’s in fine arts, and a childhood of riding and training horses all enhance Broad’s engravings and paintings. Until 2003, Deborah Mae Broad taught her craft and other artistic techniques during her college course on printmaking, drawing and bronze casting at MSUM. In her retirement, she continues making the art that she and the community love. She told Fargo Monthly, “I make my living now by making art. I’m just so lucky to do what I do, and people usually buy it.”

Through December, the Uptown Gallery will have 25 limited edition engravings and etchings on display and available for purchase. These pieces include greats like Broad’s warm “Cat Carousal” and “Home on the Prairie.” The Gallery will also have replicas of the artist’s holiday-themed prints such as “Comfort.” As a gift, Broad’s stunning artwork will amaze this holiday season.

The Uptown Gallery will be hosting an open reception for Deborah Mae Broad on Thursday, Dec. 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. Complimentary wine will be served at this event, which is open and free to the public.

As the Uptown Gallery’s CEO says, “Deborah Mae Broad is a nationally renowned printmaker. We are fortunate to represent her at the Gallery.”
