A hidden gem on Highway 281

All About Food | July 27th, 2016

Bordulac, North Dakota is two hours northwest of Fargo straight off of highway 281 North. The population is around 24, but the Bordulac Bar and Grill seems to be one of 281’s best kept not-so-secrets and has made quite a name for itself in Foster County.

The Bordulac Bar and Grill’s menu consists of burgers and steaks all sourced from Barton’s Meats, a butcher shop based in Carrington, the nearest city, which is mere minutes away.

The bar was established in 2005 and is housed in a spacious metal pole-barn structure with a clean modest contemporary country decor.

Upon entering, our waitress commented that we came in at just the right time, otherwise we would not have a had a seat. I had been in once before and the restaurant had a crowd that may or may not have exceeded the town’s population.

“Carrington doesn’t have a place where you can get steak,” said bartender Danielle Beckley, “so I think that’s why we get so busy.” She proceeded to point out two large tables, commenting that they were all from Carrington--which is the county seat of Foster county, with a population just a little over 2,000.

Once we placed our order, our waitress brought us a small loaf of freshly baked bread with whipped butter. Along with my salad she brought an assortment of dressings including housemade Thousand Island and French dressing.

My cohort ordered their signature “Outlaw Burger,” which Beckley noted was their most popular burger. It consists of two all-beef patties, pepper jack cheese, jalapeños, fried onions and a choice of potato -- and might we recommend the curly fries?

It may also be of note for the pescetarian that breaded halibut and jumbo shrimp are available. The shrimp had a nice crisp breading and came with a salad and choice of potato. Portions were generousç we both found ourselves with to-go boxes.

Along with great food The Bordulac Bar and Grill featured entertainment options such as pull tabs, a pool table, free popcorn, a jukebox, and karaoke during the winter months.

Lunch specials are featured Monday through Friday and Prime Rib is the Saturday night special--which according to our waitress is quite the draw. Kitchen hours are 11am-10pm. They do not accept credit cards but have a readily available ATM.

The bar itself did not feature a signature drink, nor do they have tap beers, but Beckley noted she makes a mean Colorado bulldog--which just might be one more reason to come back.
