Something new is coming to the downtown restaurant scene in 2016. A familiar name in Fargo dining, Andrea Baumgardner, is back with a new venture to be located in Mid Mod Madhaus Furniture, located on 115 Roberts St. N in downtown Fargo. Andrea, a pioneer in the Fargo culinary scene from her time at the fledgling Hotel Donaldson and then on to her Green Market ventures, has been a force in supporting local farmers. Now she’s back, partnering with husband Brent Bernath at his eclectic Mid Mod store, bringing Fargo its first fusion deli. As Brent put it, Jewish traditional meets Scandinavian. Look for a January opening and a lot of buzz.

Speaking of firsts, hometown boy Tim Rosendahl, aka Chef Rosey, will be bringing downtown Fargo a concept that encompasses a grilled cheese bar, piano bar, seafood market, cheese market, self-serve wine bar and bistro, all within the space once occupied by Boerth’s art shop. Pardon the literal-mindedness but it is a mouthful. Tim walked me through the building and there will be no wasted space. While that is all happening he will also be taking over the old D’Vine Wine Bar located behind Boerth’s. This is a bold adventure and I am really interested in seeing the finished product. Look for a late February opening.

A mainstay of the downtown scene for a number of years, Monte’s will be closing at the end of December for a reincarnation yet to be disclosed. The restaurant will undergo a complete remodel and rebranding for the 2016 opening. Chef/owner Christian D’Agostino said he will let me know more as the details become clearer. A little bird said … oh never mind, let’s just wait and see.

So the 2016 downtown restaurant scene starts off strong. It should be a good year.
