Many of us food fans miss our local favorite Nordic-Jewish deli in downtown Fargo. Yes, that means BernBaum’s, which unfortunately closed last fall. Specifically, missed goods include bagels, egg bake, salads, sandwiches, soups, and sweet treats. The list could go on and on.

But don’t fret, my friends. BernBaum’s is back in the form of a new cookbook. If you haven’t heard by now, Chef Andrea Baumgardner has a new recipe-laden book called “The BernBaum’s Cookbook.” Knowing her style, this cookbook promises to be chock full of recipes of favorite fare. Be sure to read the interview with Chef Andrea below for more details and events.

HPR: Tell us about what you've been up to lately?

Chef Andrea: Trying to finish the cookbook! I didn't realize how much work was involved after the manuscript was written.

HPR: Which popular BernBaum's recipes can we find in this new cookbook?

Chef Andrea: Bagels are the first recipe. Actually, sourdough starter is the first, but then bagels. Some breads and crackers, schmears, hummus, sandwich makings and many pickle recipes. Sweets, orange rolls and babka, rugelach — I think we hit the highlights, but I started this about five years ago with my sisters.

HPR: Also, please tell us about the writing and photography in the new cookbook.

Chef Andrea: I wrote, with content editing from my sisters (both professional writers/editors). There was the very important addition of a cookbook copy editor and proofreader. The testing was aided by 25 local citizens who were kind enough to make the recipe and give detailed notes afterwards. The photographs are mostly by Sarah Strong, who also worked at BernBaum's and did our social media, illustrations by Ali Burke (a local talent). Once the manuscript was together with photos, Drew Stevens was the art director. My sister, Jennifer, is the publisher.

HPR: What is the cost of the new cookbook?

Chef Andrea: $49.95

HPR: Any events coming up that you're planning?

Chef Andrea: Yes! For November, we have three local events: a signing at Olive & Rust November 15; a small plates apéro event at Michele's Table on November 22, and a signing at Stabo for Small Business Saturday, November 29.

There might be a few added to December, and then some local and regional events in early 2026. All details can be found at BernBaum's Instagram.

HPR: Will there be treats at these events?

Chef Andrea: Treats are a necessity!

HPR: Chef Andrea, this was a pleasure. Best of luck with this new venture. We look forward to replicating some of the BernBaum’s favorites.
