The folks at the NDSU Memorial Union Gallery are inviting the citizens of Fargo-Moorhead and beyond to dust off their cameras and participate in a 48 hour photo shoot to encourage family friendly urban exploration in our city. The event was designed by Anthony Faris, the Memorial Union’s newest gallery coordinator, who was also kind enough to chat with the HPR about the project.
High Plains Reader: How did the concept of the 48 hour photo shoot come to be?
Anthony Faris: This is a variation of a project I hosted in Swainsboro, GA called the Great Emanuel Shoot: a 24 Hr. Photo Shoot. The goal of the project is encourage people to take some time and go explore their community. We hope that people will get creative and use photography to see their landscape and home in a new way. Each entry will be accepted into the exhibition so the concept of the show is simple- make place, expression and exhibitions as accessible as possible.
HPR: Who can participate in the exhibition, is it just limited to FMVA members?
AF: This event isn’t associated with the FMVA. The FMVA had an exhibition earlier this month. The 48 Hour photo shoot is open to everyone- artists, students, community members, visitors. I would encourage people take their children out and take pictures with them. This is a community wide photo shoot for the community! This event is partially funded by the City's Arts Partnership Grant.
HPR: In the press release it is mentioned that the kickoff to the event will include a photo demonstration, safety tips, and a list of events taking place during the event. Can you elaborate on that a bit?
AF: The beginning of the 48 hour time period starts at 5pm on Friday so we are hosting a little event to kick-off the Made in the FM event. We will be giving some photo tips, answering questions about your cameras and talking to people about the event. We will also be showing off the Gallery and handing out maps, just in case people are unfamiliar with the area.
HPR: Who will jury the show?
AF: Student staff members from the Memorial Union Gallery will be curating the 40 pieces that will be printed for the exhibition under the Gallery Director’s supervision.
HPR: It is mentioned that digital, analog, and instagram photos will be submitted.. what are the submission and hanging requirements and how many pieces will be chosen?
AF: People are encouraged to submit up to 5 pieces each. Every submission will be included in the show and will be displayed in the gallery on digital projectors. 40 photographs will be chosen by the jurors to be printed and displayed on the walls of the Gallery. Since all images are being submitted digitally- there are no hanging requirements. The Gallery will be doing the printing of the artworks.
HPR: What do you look forward to the most with this exhibition?
I look forward to seeing where people go and what they capture during this 24 hour period. It is always exciting to see how and what people notice. Made in the FM should offer a wide variety of people, places and things and give a good representation of the Fargo/Moorhead area.
HPR: What are your favorite spots in Fargo-Moorhead?
AF: I am new here. I moved to Fargo in October so I think I’m going to photograph the places I have never been to or haven’t seen much of. My favorite places in the area are Downtown and any old building.
