Last call forever: farewell to the Nestor

November 29th, 2017

Art by Kim Jore

Live music, worn carpet, colorful bar flies, writing on the bathroom walls, a strong drink pour and trusted bartenders come to mind when the Nestor Tavern is mentioned. Whatever your memory of the Nestor Tavern, a part of Fargo’s entertainment history has passed with its closing.

The Nestor had a history as a tobacco store, cigar store, and pool hall on 1st Ave N, Fargo, around 1913. It became a bar sometime in the late 30s to mid 40s. It has been in its current…

Hosting LGBTQ+ family members during the holidays

November 24th, 2017

Thanksgiving is upon us and we’re looking at Christmas next month, unequivocally the time of the year to focus on family, friends, and loved ones.

If you grew up in this area, regardless of where you are now, we’re a people bred of farmers and we value hard work and family above everything else. It certainly helps that our harsh winters keep us indoors and together.

A few months back I wrote an article about why people should move away from North Dakota. I followed that up with a…

Plaid Friday in Downtown Fargo

November 24th, 2017

Thanksgiving is around the corner and we give thanks for the blessing of the harvest. Everyone is getting ready for the Thanksgiving feast.

After Thanksgiving, we can easily imagine the endless long lines in early morning for the best deals. Especially in the Fargo-Moorhead area, it does not sound fun at all reminding us, “No pain and no gain.”

To make this thankful weekend better and warmer, Plaid Friday and Small Business Saturday have returned to Downtown Fargo. Nicolette Berge,…

Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 16th, 2017

The Transgender Day of Remembrance memorializes the trans individuals who have lost their lives due to violence this year. It is a day where we read their names and remember them—not how they died, but how they lived. This is also a day of visibility for the trans community and bears witness to the continued violence against them. This is a time for everyone who is trans, or those whose lives have been impacted by violence against trans people, to grieve and remember those we have…

Don’t do more work than you have to

November 16th, 2017

I really like shortcuts. In my later years I have had my hair cut shorter because it is faster in the mornings. Anything to speed up my life, and make it easier.

I found a shortcut that 90% of Windows computer users don’t know about. This is a great parlor trick for Geek cocktail parties.

Say you’re looking for a specific word on a web page. Instead of scanning the page yourself, all you need to do is press Ctrl+F and type the word you’re looking for. Keep this a secret and ask…

Going to the dogs

November 8th, 2017

Next Saturday, 4 Luv of Dog Rescue’s biggest annual fundraiser will be held at Fargo’s Holiday Inn. This is a casual, family-friendly event, with the only payment being a free will donation at the door. The rest of the funds will come from the silent auction, the 50/50 raffle, and a cash bar.

“Last year it was right around $50,000 that we raised,” says Fundraising Coordinator Jill Nona, “so we’ll be looking to raise that much or more this year. We usually have about a…

Health insurance coverage in North Dakota and Minnesota

November 8th, 2017

Nobody is going to look you in the eye and tell you that choosing an insurance plan is easy, but when you’re transgender the choice can be twice as hard. I spend every year talking to our local insurance agencies to find out what is and isn’t covered for the trans healthcare.

While the second half here will be focusing on trans healthcare, I’ll start by going over some basics that can help anyone!

The first thing to talk about is the Healthcare Marketplace. If you’re in North…

Underwear & Underwrite Luncheon: protection, education, and empowerment

November 1st, 2017

African Soul, American Heart (ASAH) is a nonprofit organization in Fargo to protect, educate, and empower orphans in from the Republic of South Sudan through primary school, secondary school, and beyond.

After the civil war in South Sudan, ASAH relocated to northern Uganda to protect their students from the civil war, forced and early marriage, malnutrition, and diseases. ASAH has also been educating their students to prepare to support themselves and their families in the future, and…

Monsters on the plains

October 25th, 2017

Cryptozoology is considered a pseudoscience. Its purpose is to discern whether the legacy of the sasquatch and yeti are fact or fiction. It questions whether or not monsters walk among us or whether they’re figments of our imagination. Many of these beasts have roots in Native lore as well as European folklore. Needless to say, the Northern plains has its fair share of monsters leaving plenty of fodder for campfire tales and long winters.

Ink, iron, and the queen of rust

October 19th, 2017

When asked what sparked her interest in tattoo culture, Danielle Colby, star of the hit reality TV show ‘American Pickers,’ replied, “I think that came from my grandfather. He was in the Navy, so he was heavily tattooed. I remember he had this one tattoo of the Statue of Liberty on his forearm and it was so blown out from all of the years of being out in the sun.” She continued, “I look back on all of these tattoos my grandpa had and I guarantee you he had some tattoos from…
