Pagan Pride in the park

September 16th, 2015

By Chris Carpenter

It’s a beautiful weekend to go to Gooseberry Park in South Moorhead. That’s because on Saturday, Sept. 19, Pagan Pride Day festivities will be held at Gooseberry.

As you enter the park, you’ll see a normal gathering of people, similar to a street fair.

There will be rows of tables where you begin discovering a different path than the one you have followed before. Tables covered with soaps, herbs or, on occasion, an interesting array of crystals. You’ll come…

Prince a no-show at Labor Day dance parties

September 10th, 2015

This weekend I made my first-ever visit to Prince’s studios and concert space known as Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minn., in an attempt to see the Purple One himself. He didn’t promise to appear at this weekend’s three nights of what was billed as international dance parties in celebration of his new album “HitNRun,” which was being streamed starting at midnight on Labor Day, but then again he never does. The conventional wisdom was the higher than normal $40 cover charge…

The hilly, rural area surrounding the quiet hamlet of Rollag, Minn., will transform during this Labor Day weekend, as thousands of people from all walks of life gather for a multi-day happening to enjoy food, music and … steam engines?

That’s right. The 62nd Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion (WMSTR) – Minnesota’s other great get-together – runs from Friday, Sept. 4 at 6 a.m.through the afternoon parade on Monday, Sept. 7. WMSTR has officially assembled every year since…

The resonance of beauty

September 3rd, 2015

By Brent Behm

This spring, the unused, unwanted and sometimes unbroken items that were taking up space in the various residences of the Fargo-Moorhead area found their way to the collective curb for the annual cleanup. A bewildering array of furniture, appliances, mattresses, large plastic toys and more were tossed aside in favor of more space or perhaps in favor of some new replacement. These massive piles were comprised only of those items that wouldn’t fit in the dumpsters supplied…

Lucy Jacobson, the new owner of Revolver

By Bridget Murray

“Lucy, I’m home!” is what I like to say when I enter Revolver, a time warp full of memories.

Vintage wear has always been a fondness of mine, and while working for Shannon Grindberg of Phat Kat Antiques last summer, I met a lovely young lady who had the same love of vintage as I did. Lucy Jacobson is the new proprietor of the super-cool vintage store Revolver, located in downtown Fargo.

Born in 1981, she grew up in the…

Top 5 reasons to shop at local farmers markets

July 29th, 2015

Heart and Soil carrots

There’s a farmers market in every corner of our community. The carrots and corn are calling. And so are the tomatoes, breads, crafts, jams and more. But rather than focus on “the what” – today, we’re focusing on “the why”:

Top 5 reasons to shop at local farmers markets

1. Buy directly from the farmer; support the local economy.

“You are supporting a local farmer who’s hiring local people to work on that farm. So you’re helping the community financially,” said Bill…
